this is the road to nowhere which was built after the smokey mountains park was created to allow the locals to still reach their family gravesites

Beautiful camping spot with mountain view and next to the roaring river. Cell service is adequate. The road is a pull out on the right from Barr Rd, it is bumpy but any vehicle should be able to make it down. Highly recommend!! National forest land with a 7 day camping limit. Enough space for a large group.

One of the best campings in northern patagonia. Good prices, friendly owners, roof for tents, hot water... what else can you ask for in this land?

This road is now open again. Incredible view, in the vicinity of this pin it is the steepest paved road we have been on in all of Central America. could not climb it without low range. But it was awesome!

Small parking lot past the town over looking the ocean. Two parking lots each with enough room for about 7 vans. No “no parking” signs and we wernt bothered, though you can see some houses in the town from here. A few bar of AT&T signal which worked fine. We were the only ones here for our short one night stay. We were happy with it. Great view of the ocean.

This is a fabulous campground. Streams running in the back and pretty mountain views. It’s about 20 to 25 minutes off the main road on a pretty rough road but very doable with any vehicle. Worth the trip for a super quiet private campsite Free

Not sure if there is a charge for this if you are staying at the camp, but if you are not staying here, it's a whopping $30 for non-NJ vehicles to dump! And that's with no clean-water fill available !!!

Never cross this border unless you are 1000% sure you have all the papers. There is incompetent staff on both sides of the border. Conclusion: we are not allowed to enter Mexico and we are not allowed to return to Guatemala. And we are not allowed to stay between the borders either. With a lot of effort we managed to get into a hotel in Guatemala until the next day. We have 3 children! Our truck is between MX and GT. Use another border!

Tomorrow the story continues.

Made it up in an AWD Ford Transit 250. The description doesn’t lie - it’s a wilderness road that’s rugged but doable. And worth it! Tried to add some pictures of the worst part of the road on the corner. But the picture doesn’t do the rut on the corner justice.

I would consider this place closed. There's a no treespassing sign.

This place is the best. Hardly anyone comes here. 4wd suggested cause you never know how bad the ruts will be, especially after winter. This is my 2nd time here. Reception goes in and out. Four wheelers and occasional shooting heard during the day sometimes but quiet at dark. I wouldn’t drive through here if it was wet and had rained for sure.

Turn off the highway where the sign says White Mountain. It's a short but narrow drive to the Trailhead. Wouldn't recommend larger RVs or trailers. Some views of lake and mountains. No facilities. Decent Telus cell service. Has a fire pit made from rocks. Some road noise during the day but not visible or too loud.

A couple belonging to the HOA from condos across street warned us not to park here overnight in our camper van as the police patrol regularly and enforce a no camping policy. Told us “no camping” signs are coming in the future. We didn’t bother to test the warning and moved on.

Delicious lunch here at El Comalote! Fresh tortillas being made as we ate. Not backpackers budget, but not expensive either! My lunch was 80Q, as an example, and more food than I could eat. Excellent hot chocolate (with or without milk). I had it without.

We spent a night with our 26-foot camper. A guy made us pay 10,000 COP at the entrance. Not recommended on Saturday night because it is very noisy (guys come to drink beers all night with loud music). Big rig ok and near town

Kazakhstan > Uzbekistan. Complete chaos leaving me clueless. Drove past the line of trucks in the Kazakh side to front of the line where the circus begins. One officers waves you through while the other one signs us to stop. You get a paper which you need to get stamped twice. Drive to the line of trucks indicated with a bus sign. You still following? Show passport and car documents, get first stamp. Drive through and park car on the left side, walk to the right side to a small customs building with passport, car documents and import paper (they keep this). Then drive to the next barrier to small building on the left where you get the second stamp on the paper. At the barrier you get your passport stamped with Kazakh exit stamp. After the barrier you hand in the piece of paper to a military guy who seemed to ask for money but it wasn't very clear. Then the Uzbek side. They hose down your car and ask 15.000 some, don't pay! Then passerger exits and driver + car goes through something that might be an X-ray machine, I have no clue. Park car on the left and go to building on the right. Once inside you go to the second desk first, then the first desk, then the third desk. Here you also get a paper with stamp and leave your documents. Then go back to the car so they can search it very thoroughly. Once that is done go back inside and retrieve your documents. Once back at the car you receive your second stamp. Then one last simple hirdle: at the entry gate to Uzbekistan you give the piece of paper to the guy there and you're good to go.

All in all the whole process took about 2-2,5 hours

Unsuitable for tents, but a bunch of campers as we stopped by!
The nature reserve is worth a stop by.
If there is no space left, just follow the road … there are a bunch of camping grounds or head a bit into town!

Little parking spot right next to the road. we camped in our car, few other capers around (all sizes). Relativly quiet with some cars in the night.

Next to the road there is a flattish area of river gravel, space for three or four cars. Next to road but locals friendly and encouraging. be careful of sudden river rise after rain though.
