Description

Chacaltaya used to be the highest ski slope in the world but the glacier melted. In AprilMay there might be enough snow to ski a few meters. Otherwise it's a nice walk to get acclimatized and test yourself above 5000m with a nice scenery.
The road is very bumpy we made it to this point around 4900m high in a 2WD furgón. Some Toyota minibuses make it all the way to the refugio at 5300m. Our diesel car was just to exhausted at this altitude. We thought the access road from the north side was better!

Latest Check-Ins

Got to the top with our 2WD diesel Iveco Daily van (6m long).
BUT WE DEFINITELY DO NOT RECOMMEND DOING THIS ROAD WITH YOUR OWN VEHICLE, unless you have a 4WD and are experienced driver. The road is VERY sketchy. More over, diesel is bad here and there is lack of oxygen, so the van does not work properly either.

The views from the top are amazing, but just take a tour up there and thank us later.

We saw some Toyota minivans get up there with tourists, but longer vehicles than ours wouldn't be able to make some turns.
