Description

Honduras-Guatemala, Corinto Border:

NEW ONE STOP SHOP BORDER - AT THE BORDER - BOTH HONDURAS & GUATEMALA MIGRACION & ADUANA IN THE ONE PLACE - WINDOWS SIDE BY SIDE!

Exit Guatemala: The immigration office (sign posted) is about 10kms back from the Honduran side and the aduana is 15 mins back from the immigration office. The aduana was not signposted, just a small office with a blue door after a small bridge, I think called Rio Negro.

Enter Honduras: At immigration, passport was stamped, entry fee cost USD$3 or 58 Honduran Lempiras(HNL). Aduana was in a building across the car park.

(Note: First person processing Honduran TIP collected $40 US without receipt but later returned this from his wallet after confronting him with his ill deed.)

Nothing really at the border until around Puerto Cortez, where there are nice hotels, restaurants, gas, ATM's etc.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Exit Honduras:
1. immigration of both countries is right next to another. Very fast and simple.

2. Aduana: the building behind migration.
A. Go to Honduras booth. Show passport and TIP. They cancel TIP and keep the paper.
B. Go to Guatemala booth. Show passport and vehicle registration. Vehicle gets checked quickly. You have to pay 160 Quetzales (Moto). Has to be payed at a bank!
DONT CROSS ON A SUNDAY!
Banks are closed and I had to pay 100 Quetzales for somebody to use his online banking to pay the receipt. No other option.

Still the same issue to pay tip on the sunday, it seems it wont change anytime soon according to the people from Aduana. If you are lucky you can get someone very easy but if not it may take a while.
We spend 1 hour to find someone for TIP payment, it wasn’t that bad compare to other customs. The rest of the process was very easy and fast
Good thing is that staff from aduana was always helpfull to find someone as soon as possible.

We crossed the border from Guatemala to Honduras today. We downloaded the app to pre register which might help.
We started at the white tent where we had to fill out a Google form. There was a lady who gave us the wifi password.

You need 800l in cash to pay for the vehicle permit. There are some people exchanging money at the entrance of the border.

The whole process took us 2h for two vehicles including money change.

We travel with a dog, I'll add a picture that I took at the boarder with the specifications for entering Honduras with cats and dogs

Report Check-In

i was able to cross on a Sunday but boy was it a close one. The banks are closed (as mentioned in the place description) and they don't take any other form of payment due to COVID. I found one customs agency who was open, and she contacted another person (named "Gaby Amor", lol) who then sent her a screenshot of a computer which had proof that it was paid. I'm not sure what kind of backdoor thing went down, but there was a point in which the agent told me the system was down or closed and I'd have to come back on Monday to pay. Then she got a random call and it all worked.

The moral of the story is you can cross Sunday, but I wouldn't depend on it.

Report Check-In

Easy border but you need time!!
The guy at the enterance told you where to go and everything.
1. white tent with QRcode for Corona questionnaire(on your right hand) & vaccination control
2. Migration (middle of the place Guatemala to Honduras is in the back of the "mainstreet")
You have to take the really left desk first (leaving Guatemala), then the next desks are the enterance to Honduras. Stamp for passports. 80l per Person.
3. Go to the "aduana" - first Guatemala side to quit your SAT temp. import and then further on to Honduras side for new TIP. Costs 798l.
4. for dogowners go to the SEPA across the aduana desks and show the papers of your animal, short check if the dog looks like described in tbe passport, that's everything. Costs 300l.

Your finished! Go to your car and leave the border zone. Have prepared for leave:
passports, TIP and animalimport (but they only want to see our passports & TIP for leaving.

We needed 3hours to get through. They can make copies themselves, but it's good to have your passports, carpapers and animalpapers in copy so you can hand the copies over.

There is an app to precheckin to the Honduras border (prechequeo migratorio Honduras, turquoise logo with a walking man with suitcase) but it was down today and it was no problem to cross without any precheckin or filling online forms before...

Longest border crossing so far.
A few tips: do the pre-check in for Honduras before getting here. For flight #: 00. It will email you the PDF that you need to show to enter.
Still have to do COVID check in and show proof of vaccine. There is wi-fi at this station.
Get ready to wait in many lines. Started crossing at 10am and still waiting in line at 12:45. Should have brought the camp chairs.

Report Check-In

Different experience than what we read on here previously. We did not need proof of covid shots nor did we need a negative test. we went to a window as directed in the 'health' area. The friendly agent showed us that we needed to scan a QR and then walked us through filling out the application and filling out questions which took about 5 minutes for each person. she then stamped a little white piece of paper and sent us on our way. we were traveling with our two dogs, our Toyota 4Runner and a 16 ft trailer. the whole process took about 3 hours. we did not need to fill out anything beforehand as we had read on here. we didn't have to fill out any forms at all except the one that asked a couple of questions as to whether we had any covid symptoms . Similar to our experience in mexico, when we paid one of the fees, the agent attempted to not give us any change or give us the wrong change. this time when entering Honduras, we had to pay $789 lempira and gave the young lady 1000 lempira. after being gone for a bit she came back and handed me 10 lempora and then became friendly quickly asking me questions about our travel. first time she was really interested at all. I asked her about the change and she said I already gave it to you. I was still holding the 10 up right in front of the window and pointed to it and to the amount we were supposed to pay. she then said oh, my mistake and looked at her desk and there was a 200 that had supposedly just fallen. I generally am a bit trusting with people but this attempt was pretty clumsy and obvious. overall however the experience was pleasant and people were mostly helpful. make sure you have lempira or else you have to go and find one of the guys at the entrance who does Exchange. that can be tricky, especially if it's dark. also be aware that when you drive into Honduras, you will experience large potholes with no warning right away.

You NEED to get these online prechecks before and for the exact date you are travelling. We were delayed of 1 day and we had to redo them. No wifi here and we had no data plan so we paid people who offer their services to do so.

When coming in there is a container which is their « salud » check point. You go there, they check your vaccination proof, take your temperature and check if you did your online covid form

Then its Migracion where you first check out of guatemala. He sends you to another ventilla to come in Honduras. Thats where he checks your precheck. You pay 80 lempiras, 30 Q or $5 us.

Then aduana at the back of the parking. 1 ventilla to get out of guatemala, another one to enter Honduras. You need copies of your TIP, your passeport (identification page + visa page) immatriculations, license + 780 lempiras in cash.

No Atm, just people changing money.
There is a service of photocopies.

We spent 2.5 hours here

Gautemala to Honduras.
Very smooth and friendly crossing, we were almost alone and it only took us 2 hours. Process as described by thepanamericandream below, with a few remarks:
- nobody asked for our precheck-in
- we did not need to make a copy of our stamped passport, the aduanas made the copies themselves (maybe because it wasn’t busy)
- for the TIP you need to pay 781,09 lempiras in cash (646,09 l for the processing - you get a receipt and 135 l for the paper itself - as indicated in the top right corner of the paper). They tried to ask for 900 lempiras, but you can easily stand your ground. Make sure you have this amount in cash (quetzal), and go and change it for lempiras at the entrance of the border zone. Ask for small bills, because they do not have change.
- nobody checked our car.

From Guatemala to Honduras. Border crossing with our campervan went fine. Took 3 hours, everybody was friendly, no corruption. They didn’t search our van. No “helpers” either. BUT at the Honduras side you can only pay with CASH. No cards, no bank, no atm, nothing. So bring enough cash. There are people near the border that offer an ok rate for changing money after negotiation.

Guate>Honduras
WARNING: This took us 7 hours (95% of our time was spent standing in line). We arrived at 815am and left at 315pm. Bring a book.
*When you drive in the agent will quickly check your papers at the gate to make sure you have everything you need. Make sure you have the Honduras immigration pre-check PDF (on your phone is fine), which you need to submit online in advance.
*First, you go to the white tent on the right and park, wait in line. They review your Covid vax (use a copy) and passport. They give you back the vax card stamped and a piece of paper with your temperature, also stamped. You will need these at Honduras immigration.
*Next, go to the Centro de Control. Get in line to exit Guatemala. Have your passport stamped that you exited.
*Next, get in the line next door to enter Honduras. Give them your passport and the papers from the vax check in. You will also need to show your Honduras immigration pre-check here. You’ll give finger prints and they take your picture. You pay 30Q. They stamp your passport. Apparently the date they give on the stamp is the entire time for Guate, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua so we asked the guy to give us 70 more days just in case. This line took 3 hours and people started arguing because someone cut in line and the police even came to calm everyone down.
*Next, go back to the entrance and make a copy of your newly stamped passport page.
*Next, go over to the Aduanas. Bring your Guate TIP, your DL, your passport, copy of passport photo page, copy of passport Honduras stamp, copy of car title, copy of car registration. 780L. Note: Guatemala has a copier to make the copies they need, but Honduras does not.
*Next, go to SEPA if you have a dog. They need the certificate of health, proof of vaccinations and the paper you should have gotten at the Guatemalan border. Unfortunately, we didn’t have this paper because everyone we asked at the Guatemalan border said we didn’t need anything for the dog. They called the other border and finally let us go. Also bring your drivers license and card (can’t pay cash for this one). 300L.
*Now you can finally drive out. Show your passport, the dog paper, the Guate exit TIP paper and the Honduras TIP paper. They glance in your car window. Then you can finally go!

Info on TIPs is up to date. 160 quetzales to get into Guatemala and 745ish Lempiras to get into Honduras. The "ish" on the Honduras' cost is because they will try to charge more.. But the legal cost is as reported above.
Keep in mind that Honduras requests an immigration online precheck to be presented at the moment that you get your covid vaccines check (pdf in your phone are ok)

In addition to my previous post:
The 160 quetzales need to be paid online. There’s no other way. It costs you 50 quetzales.

Very easy border crossing from Honduras to Guatemala (extremely easy even compare to the Nicaraguan border crossings). Took us about 30 minutes in total.
You cannot withdraw money at the on side bank, and they don’t change money. You simply have to find a guy on the street. So you don’t have to avoid border crossings on Sundays I presume.

This border was difficult for us! We have a big truck and travel trailer. At the Belize/ Guatemala border, apparently they they didn’t give us a permit for our trailer. They told us it was fine.B ut this border was not having it. So they wanted to email the other border. The Guatemalan aduana did. It make this a priority. They went to lunch leaving us sit there for an hour and a half and then when they came back they just kinda shrugged their shoulders, making us wait longer, not telling us what was going on until I got got feisty with them. He then explained he would fix our problem for $150 US with no receipt. I told him no way so he knocked it down to 75, I told him we were traveling and have limited funds so he knocked it down to $50. I gave in.By then it was getting dark, we had been there 5hrs so we crossed back into Guatemala and slept for the night. He signed a paper and said we can go to the Honduras part and get our permits now. So today we came back and got our permit for truck and trailer in Honduras. 2 hrs.
So just a warning! Make sure you have permits for your vehicles even if you have a travel trailer. It cost us $40 US for each.

Process as described by other Overlanders.
BUT BEWARE OF COSTS.
$3usd/pp for Honduran entry fee/ passport stamp YES!
TIP (Temporary Import Permit) for Honduras - check the receipt before handing over ANY money. Our receipt said 636.79 Lempira but the employee charged us 950 Lempira. We didn't even look at the receipt until after we left. So we went back and successfully demanded the extra money back. The guy reluctantly pulled it out of his pocket after insisting the difference was due to a fabricated extra phantom charge
called COHEP.
Lessons learned: 1. Never pay for anything without receiving a receipt 2. Check the receipt before handing over money. 3. Understand that they can sound very convincing and be ultra friendly while they're ripping you off.

Funny the different experiences here. Talked and joked with the guards and still got ripped off. The first two guard shacks prior to the border simply wave you on to the final dual buildings right on the border. Got passport stamped at blue building Guatemala window, paid $3 US and then got stamped at Honduras window next to it. Next, head to the yellow building to get your TIP (import your car). First guy to see in yellow building is more toward the parking lot and he is a Guatemala guy who will give you a temporary exit stamp (suspension) on the back of your Guatemala SAT papers if you request it. The second guy toward the back of the yellow building from Honduras asks for copies and you have to walk into town to get the passport stamp copied, plus other copies of your title, registration and documents. You can to this by walking outside the compound and stopping at the last room on the left of the concrete strip-center on the left of the street. Then when you get back, the same Honduras guy you are working with asks for $40 US for your car permit (WARNING - HE IS KEEPING IT) then you go to another guy on the other side of the yellow building and wait somewhere near there where he can signal you when he is finished. About 30 minutes later, he calls you to the window and gives you a bill and sends you to a cashier who collects another $40. HOWEVER - NOTE. I walked around the building to the first guy and I stuck the receipt in the window that I just paid for saying "su carga mi double" and get this. He stood up and gave me the money back OUT OF HIS WALLET. Go figure - not the brightest bulb in the basket. So he then told me I didn't have to return to the other guy and I saw him walking through the building to get all my papers for me when the second guy told me to come to his window after I paid. However after hitting him up for the money he took from me, this guy (who originally asked for the $40 cash) told me he would finish the transaction for me and I didn't have to return to the guy who was waiting on me. I assume this was so I didn't get to tell his superior he scammed me for the cash.

Honduras to Guatemala @ Corinto.
BEWARE Guatemala Aduana. Crossed this border 30 January 2018 from Honduras to Guatemala. Arrived there 11:00am - Migracion (Passport Control) easy, quick and friendly - both Honduras exit and Guatemala entry were straightforward - through in 15 minutes. Vehicle TIP was a nightmare. Aduana Office for both Honduras and Guatemala is combined - separate building to Migracion - look for the row of Trucks parked across the compound. Honduras exit easy - friendly lady checked my Passport, cancelled the TIP on her computer and kept the TIP.
Guatemala Aduana Officers not present - will not be here until 13:00 (it's now 11:30) - but who is that sitting behind the 2 windows, refusing to open the hatches and speak to me? They are busy with Truck Paperwork, you must come back later at 13:00. Can you give me a Form to complete? No. Can you tell me what paperwork you need? No. Do you need copies of Passport/Padron/Drivers Licence? Don't know. Come back at 13:00.
Truck Drivers arrive - they are entering Guatemala - the window hatches open - their paperwork is processed - they smile and leave.
I tap on the windows - come back at 13:00! 13:00 arrives - I've waited 90 minutes - many Truck Drivers have been processed and driven into Guatemala! The 2 guys behind the windows pack up their stuff and leave.
2 new guys arrive. They spend 15 minutes chatting and doing something on their computers. Eventually the window hatches open. I smile and give the guy my paperwork explaining that I am entering Guatemala with my vehicle as a Tourist and need a TIP. All goes well. My vehicle is checked and a form completed on the computer. He prints the form and hands it to me advising there's a fee of Q160 for the TIP. OK - I give him the Q160. No he says, you must go to the Bank and pay this - get the form stamped and bring it back here. The Bank just over there? (There's a bank with 2 cashiers waiting behind glass windows - plus a man with the ubiquitous Pump Action Shotgun protecting them - it's right next to the Aduana Office). No! Says the Aduana Officer - you must go to the Bank inside Guatemala and pay - it is 20km in from the Border. That doesn't make any sense. I'm not doing that!
Or you can pay US$40 cash and I will stamp your TIP and issue the Window Sticker. $40 is Q300 - that's an extra Q140! I refuse. I thrust my Q160 at him and tell him that's all he's getting. He gives a couldn't care less look and starts to serve someone else. By now I've been waiting at the Aduana Office for 2 and a half hours. My patience has worn thin. I have to bite my tongue not to shout. Picking on us Overlanders to make some extra bucks!
My wife starts to cry - big honest tearful sobs. The Truck Drivers waiting in line are sympathetic. The Aduana Officers soften and call me back to the window. Take my Q160 and stamp my TIP - give me the essential window sticker and we're through.
15 minutes for Migracion. 3 hours for Aduana.
Watch out - up to you if you want to pay $40 when the Official Cost is $22 (Q160) - I refused - like I've refused to pay any of the 'bribes' suggested my bent Cops and Border Officials so far in my 22,000km of LatAm road!
Safe Journey!!

We went from Honduras to Guatemala and this is a very handy one stop shop now. Migration Honduras next to Migration Guatemala ventanas at the road, both aduanas for the car license across the car park. Friendly and fast. Payment: entry for car 160Q + 70Q to get the bank payment done in the little office at the border.

now everything has to be done here for both countries. on a side it's to go from Guatemala to Honduras, the other side, the opposite.
it was free to exit Guatemala.
to enter honduras, we paid 3$/75L/30q pp for a taxe and received a ticket. for the car, it was 40$ but we didn't get any receipt.
all of the process was easy and fast.
By the way, we have french passports, and our car is registrated in Québec, Canada.

We found this border crossing very easy. 35 minutes to get through early afternoon on a Wednesday - 2 Brits and a UK registered van. Check out of Guatemala at window 1 in Centro de Control, check in to Honduras at Window 2. Then we crossed the parking lots to the Duana area and asked for a temporary exit of the vehicle from Guatemala. The TIP was stamped and signed on the back with Salida Temporal and given back to us. It was not cancelled. No issues requesting this. Then back to window 4 in Centro de Control for the Honduras vehicle TIP. US$40 for this and off we go.... very easy. Very helpful. Hope you all have a similar experience.

Was expecting the worst after hearing about the rampant corruption in Honduras but the crossing fromm Guatemala was actually quite smooth. took 2 1/2h but that's what you kinda have to expect in this part of the world, they're not fast. mexico to Guatemala was a lot messier, at least here they have sons showing where what is.

Report Check-In

Pay attention at the guatemala aduana, the guy ripped us off by way overcharging us for the temporary import permit. We didn't realize what happened until we got back to the car, went back in and ask for a receipt, he made up excuses why he could not give us one. Easy border crossing for the most part, and very quiet, but be careful here. This was the only time we got ripped off or had any problem in over a dozen border crossings. Otherwise The border was very quiet, on the day we crossed- probably the least activity we've seen on any border. The Guatemala migration office took over an hour to process approx 10 people in line in front of us, only one guy was working, so that might be very slow if you got unlucky like we did.

Border Crossing: Guatemala / Honduras | Posted June 10th, 2013 at  http://www.vangabonds.com/border-crossing-guatemala-honduras/

We cross borders by land in a CR-V with US passports and our two dogs. We do not carry drugs or weapons or disallowed fruit (usually).

When, Where, and Which Direction: June 1, 2013 – Entre Rios, Izabal, Guatemala > Corinto, Cortés, Honduras

What We Needed: Though we had a decently smooth crossing  from Mexico into Guatemala [LINK: http://www.vangabonds.com/border-crossing-mexicoguatemala/]  last month without any preparation beforehand, we took the unnecessary stresses of the day as a reminder to be grateful for our fortunately successful crossings thus far and to do a little bit more research ahead of time in the future. A quick Google search returned very little on the northeastern-most border crossing aside from reports that an integral bridge had been washed away a few years ago, but there was information from a number of individuals who had overlanded at El Florido, the border crossing near Copán Ruinas, who had all had similar experiences and recommendations for others including needed documents and fees. The most organized and helpful information was provided by the folks at the  30forthirty [LINK: http://30forthirty.org/border-crossings/]  blog, but they don’t travel with pets so we looked into that separately and reached out to others who we know do.

What we expected to need during the crossing were our:
Passports,Driver’s license(s),Vehicle title and registration,Cancelled Guatemalan vehicle import permit (did not end up needing this at our location),Certificates of vaccinations for the dogs,Certificate of good health for the dogs (in English and Spanish), andCopies of all of the above. The Process: Turning onto CA-13 towards Entre Rios from CA-9N begins the trek towards the quiet border, 25 kilometers away. The road is fine and the first stop, a bit past Entre Rios, is marked by a plain, single story building on the right side with 3 or 4 doors and a snack shack of sorts. There were cones and a stop sign in the road, but most vehicles drove right through. Imported vehicles should pull off onto the side of the road here and kindly ask the guard-type man with the gun (he will probably be snacking) to direct you to the office for vehicle import permit cancellation. Here you’ll need your Guatemalan temporary auto import permit, the windshield sticker for that permit, your title, a copy of your title, your registration, a copy of your registration, the owner’s passport, and a copy of that passport. The man behind the desk does some form sorting and stamping and then sends you on your merry way – no fees paid and no paperwork to show for the cancellation.
Driving down the road a ways further, the second stop is comprised of a two room building on the right side of the road (one labeled for entry and one labeled for exit) also partnered with a snack shack. A few military men may be blocking the road or standing in the shade off to the side, and at least one money exchanger is ready to swap currencies as needed. Here, travelers need only their passports. Enter the door marked “salida” and sit quietly until the lady behind the desk is ready for you. This process is quick and painless; you should leave with a stamped passport. Some reports indicate an unofficial 10 quetzal exit fee, but we were charged nothing.

The Honduran portion of the border is a few kilometers later, and the entrance to this area is marked by an open fence gate with a small single room building on the right side at which you do not need to stop. A few money changers hang out here. The complex inside is decently large, but all within a shared, paved parking lot and void of the overwhelming loiterers of many borders. There is a large building on the right side of the road, with a handful of medium sized buildings beyond and behind it. Overlanders with dogs will visit four of the buildings. The first stop is at an open window at the first, large building in front. After reviewing your passport, the official will hand it back to you with a short migration registration form to complete before issuing a stamp, collecting the entrance fee, and stapling the carbon copy of the form and the receipt for the entry fee into your book. The $3 USD entrance fee can be paid in US dollars, Honduran lempiras, or Guatemalan quetzales, and the receipt is issued in US dollars.
Next, travelers with a vehicle should park their car in front of the office directly behind the migration building at the window marked “aduana”. For a temporary auto import permit, drivers need to produce the registration, a copy of the registration, the driver’s passport, the driver’s license, and a copy of the license. We were not asked for a title or proof of cancellation of our Guatemalan permit, though we read that this is the case at El Florido. Perhaps because of the stifling heat and humidity, the official did not even exit the building, but simply checked our plate numbers from the window and completed the paperwork and transaction relatively quickly. The fee was $32 USD which could be paid in US dollars or Honduran lempiras. We paid in dollars and received change in lempiras at a good 1:20 exchange rate. Vehicles imported to Honduras receive only a paper permit, not a sticker.

Honduras-Guatemala, Corinto Border: Crossed 18/9/12.

Exit Guatemala:
The immigration office (sign posted) is about 10kms back from the Honduran side and the aduana is 15 mins back from the immigration office. The aduana was not signposted, just a small office with a blue door after a small bridge, I think called Rio Negro. Got my immigration exit stamp (no charge). No one could tell me exactly where the aduana was and rode around the nearby town trying to find it. After some bad directions I ended up driving 15kms back to Puerto Barrios where I was eventually directed to an aduana. They gave me the exit papers with copies (no charge, I still kept the original SAT paper for the Nicaraguan exit to show) and asked why I hadn't gone to the one near the border? They explained exactly where it was and told me I have to give the copies to that office. Drove back to the un-sign posted aduana near the border and handed over the photocopies. Took about 2hrs 30mins, should have taken about 30 mins.

Enter Honduras:
At immigration, passport was stamped, entry fee cost USD$3 or 58 Honduran Lempiras(HNL). Aduana was in a building across the car park. The lady at the office checked my paperwork, issued me the temporary import paper and stamped the entry in my passport (no charge). Then had to walk 100m into Honduras to get photocopies of the documents, passport entry stamp etc. USD$1.20 or HNL24. Returned back to aduana and handed over photocopies. I was told insurance was not necessary. Could then drive into Honduras. Fumigation guys told me to pass and was not necessary. Whole process took around 1hr 30mins. Nothing really at the border until around Puerto Cortez, where there are nice hotels, restaurants, gas, ATM's etc.
