Description

A lovely national park that highlights the San Salvador Volcano and offers great views of it. Three Miradores and some trails available. It was $2USD for entrance and $1USD for parking. The drive was steep (uphill) and at times very narrow but doable with our 2WD. We enjoyed our time here.

The path around the crater is closed - and no sneaking round either; it's guarded by an armed guard by the antennae. So as mentioned, a long drive up for all of about ten minutes' stroll to three miradors more or less next to each other. Interesting to see the crater-within-a-crater, and the small exhibition at the gate, but a very brief outing once you're there!

If you allow yourself to get waved into the first 'Casa vieja' car park you'll be charged $2; if you're not too big you can park up for free on the roadside just above, or in the official park car park, which I think was $1.

I use these coordinates on Google and it took me to someone house. Google had the wrong direction.
if you use Boquerón NP coordinateif you use Boquerón NP coordinates, it takes you to someone residence. The drive has a gate. It's a dead-end street. I put in this spot marker so you can use the right turn to get to NP. up the road, there will be a dog right turn where dirt road takes to the left. please do not use that. just stay on the asphalt road, and it will end at NP.

Not worth the gas for the drive up if you plan on hiking or have already hiked other volcanoes. This is like a 5-10 minute walk to a viewpoint. $2/pp +$2 for a van.

If going north, go do Santa Ana, Pacaya, and Acatenango instead 😅

So it is 2USD per person to enter + parking. The park itself is pretty small with the highlight being a couple of miradors to the crater.
We did not try to hike around the rim or to the crater because we came late in the afternoon. Anyway it seems like it is not a part of the park but rather private land to go around. There is a sign saying do not continue, this is the edge of the park. But the path is not really gated, so technicaly I guess you could just not see the sign and continue walking.

pay attention.

The last 2 km Access road are asphalted but narrow. The parking of the park is very small. We came a tuesday afternoon with a 24ft RV and we had to cross some vehicules and WE could Park.

We walk the entire circular track of the caldera clockwise.
The second half doesnt present any interrest because you dont have any views. Also, be aware that it becomes dangerous . The path is narrow and not stable, right on the depth. To find the track leading the parking lot at the end is also difficult.

my advise : Passing the sign saying 'end of NP dont pass' , walk only the first half until it becomes dodgy. And return.

Magnificent! The park entrance area is nice, but you can do two mega hikes here. One is around the rim of the whole crater, which we did with a man who was drinking a beer at the mirador when we got there! He was a Salvadoran American (didn't like the word guanaco haha), who was stoked to join us when we invited him. He turned out to be 64! Though spry, and when the trail became overgrown it was his motivation that kept us pushing on (All trails says to turn back here, not a bad idea!). It was about 5 miles and epic. Follow All trails or just head left when you get to the rim and at stay along the rim (at some point you have to duck the fence out of the national parks little strict area).

The other mega hike which we did not do is down to the picturesque dimple in the crater. we found the way down, follow the previous instructions and when you go below the tiendita with a little bridge, instead of going up after this point go down that trail!

Stay classy friends.
