Description

Wild camping on NFS land 4 miles from Leadville. Paved road up until the last quarter mile, then it's a washed out dirt road (not that bad though). Several spots to park, perfectly level, and very quiet. There was still snow on the shoulders in mid-May, which limits the places you can park, but we were the only ones here, so had the pick of our choice. Found a spot with a fire pit even.

Great little hidden spot on the left, not too far after you leave the pavement and it turns to dirt. almost didn't look like a spot, I barely fit back in between 2 trees but it's a nice little secluded spot set back from the road. Great 5G, AT&T and T-Mobile.

Matchless Campground. Camped at a huge lot near lake with an awesome Turquoise Lake trailhead nearby. Fee waived, off season. Bathroom open. Boat ramp closed. 1 bar on Verizon but full coverage up the hill.

Tabor campground. Basically a converted parking lot, but right on the lake and very nice. Central water and vault toilets. No dump, but there is one nearby at the group camp. All the nearby reservation only campgrounds are full, but the first come, like this one, are nearly empty. Weird. Others reported dispered sites along the south shore, but they are all closed off. There are still plenty of sites below the dam on Half Moom Creek. With the senior pass, this site costs me $11 per night, so I'll hang out here for a while.

site has been shut down. There's others I'm the area, but this one has been blocked off with a wooden fence.

There was a sheriff nearby so we asked him where to stay. He directed us to this dirt road area and said to park anywhere off the road. There were lots of other rvs but plenty of room to find a semi private spot. Most spots had a place for a campfire. It was very quiet on our weeknight stay.

Spent 2 weeks here avoiding the heatwave that is gripping the West. Due to elevation, this area is nice and cool. This area has 3 main "entrances" and is a network of connecting roads. The main road is very well maintained.
GPS coordinates take you to the first entry road to this area. There are some nice sites in by this first entry and 2 bars of 4G Verizon, but intermittent. I would avoid anything longer than 30ft for the first area. The sites in this area are decently spaced. The road is very good but does have one sharp turn.
If you drive past the GPS location and head down the road approximately 3/4 mile there will another road to your left. Be mindful of this entry as if you are on the left side of the road there is a big dip. If you have a lot of rear overhang take this at an angle. Definitely stop and look at it first. The road is a big rocky but totally doable. This area has the best Version. We consistently had 3 bars of 4G. The sites here are larger and more spaced. I did see some larger fifth wheels back here.
If you continue on the main road past that side street you will end up by an open flat field. If you are driving a big rig this is your spot. On father's day weekend this area held at least 30 toy haulers with plenty of space to maneuver.
There were quite a few dirt bikes, dune buggies and ATVs on the weekend, but it was quite during the week.
There is a dump in town, about 10 minutes from this area. Water is $5 and dumping is $10.
Turquoise Lake is about a mile from this area and always has a good breeze. Tons of places for dogs to swim at the lake.

We drove further in than this marker. There are several open areas within this NF dispersed throughout the pine forest. Stone fire pits all over and plenty of firewood. It’s early may, there is some snow on the shoulders, and in the forest. It is supposed to get down to 23 f here tonight.
