Moz to Zim. Moz 10 minutes, everyone wanted a gift, but not insisting. Zim 45 minutes, 3 steps with a lot of handwriting. Not asked for gifts on Moz side. 50$ for road tax + insurance in a rented vehicle.

Using Pafuri + Sango to go from Kruger to Gonarezhou works well

Report Check-In

As described very quick crossing ZIM>MOZ (Ger passports with CDP) even at Sunday evenings (5 p.m.). No road tax or insurance asked at MOZ.

Just added that there were many changers at both sides, 65 MZN for 1 USD, they also offer SIM cards.

One ATM (no local fees for Visa Card) and petrol station (small, just 1 min out of town going southeast) at Malvernia.

Sidenote: If you exit Gonarezhou too late to cross the border it should be possible to wildcamp in the 5 km stretch of road between the park gate and border post (though no side streets exist).

Moz to Zim

Mozambique side was easy and fast, just an exit stamp and had to give back the TIP, 5 minutes.

Zimbabwe side took over an hour even if we were alone at first. Problem was that we only had Euro with us and no USD or Rand. The entry visa is 30$ and after he confirmed with his boss we paid 30€ each. Then he filled out a few receipts and the sticker and put it in our passports. Then we went into the customs office where we presented our Carnet. After explaining how it works it was filled out and we didn’t have to pay for the TIP. Then we had to pay for the Carbon tax and like before she had to call her boss if it’s okay to pay in Euro. Cost was 20$ and we paid 20€ in the end. So better to bring USD, but if you bring Euro you have to have the exact amount as they can’t and won’t change.

Zim to Moz with CPD. French and USA passports. Easy small border, as said before.
We paid our Moz "registration fee" (no Visa anymore for us) with USD as we didnt have Meticais. Its 650 Met, so normally 10 USD but they asked for 12$. Not sure its legit but we had no choice. This time they didn't ask for our hotel booking, wich they asked when we crossed from Malawi to Moz 2 weeks ago.
Then we had to show them what to do with the CPD.
Friendly folks but people on both side were really into getting a "gift" from us so please stay polite and smile, make a few jokes but do NOT give anything.

We took our insurance online, 280 SA Rands for one month (hollsure.co.za) for a Hilux.
No money changer / simcard sellers / beggers on site (beside the officials), its a very peaceful border.

Road in Moz is really good tar til the coast (Xaixai). Zim side, not the same. We came from the gate of North Gonarezhou NP and the road was heavily corrugated all the way (120km) and quite bumpy with big holes every so often. Took us about 2h30, tires at 1.6bar, 4x4 engaged.

Great border crossing going into Moz. UK citizens so didnt need visas which may have made it easier. Zim side just needed to stamp our visas and give us a gate stamps for immigration and customs. Moz side, went through gate and got a light search of car and asked for something which we declined and they let us through. Immigration very easy, just a few forms were filled out by the immigration officer and we have 200 ZAR per person. Customs also very easy. Couldnt buy insurance at the border and closest is Chokwe, a good 200km away so best to get it online before getting to the border. No signal at border but can get a SIM in town - 300mzn for 4gb of data from a local agent.

Terrible mozambique border post.
The zimbabwe side - no problems.
The moz side - the chief officer is the biggest asshole I've ever met. And of course they don't speak english.
First, they wanted 150 usd for visa on arrival (normal visa costs 50, so they wanted 100 usd bribe).
Then they didn't want to accept my accommodation booking because of no reason (I guess the assholes still hoped for a bribe). After they didn't succeed, they were lying it's only a single entry visa (while officialy it's a double entry, either they're stupid or hoped for another bribe).
After all of this, the visa system broke down, so had to wait a few hours until it was working.

but...
it wasn't the end of the adventure. The staff at the mozambique border was so unqualified that when the system was back, I actually needed to help them use their computer in order to get my visa.

After waiting most of the day, somehow I crossed the border without paying any bribe and getting double entry visa.

Better choose some more popular border posts.
These kind of border officers should be sitting in jail, not at the border.

Small and pleasant border post from Zimbabwe to Mozambique

We got our visas at the border which took about two hours total crossing from Zim to Mozambique. They were $50pp. Staff friendly and mostly helpful.

In theory this would actually be an easy border, but unfortunately the visa-system broke down when we wanted to cross into mozambique... It took a long time to fix it (more than half a day), but they allowed us to camp right at the border for free. We felt safe and the guys were friendly!
Visa on arrival was 50 USD pp.

By the way: the tar road from the border to chokwe is in perfect condition.
