Something not right?

Description

We accidentally did the Laguna Route north to south after taking a wrong turning. Google maps said 3 hours. It probably took us 12. The road is horrible in places. Only trucks with great clearance could do this, and even then you should expect to break down.

Had to wild camp halfway along and despite a decent wind break, temperatures got down to -10 and our radiator froze...

I’ve attached a photo of a relatively representative section, not even the worst. By the end we were so tired of going 10kmph and constant jolting we didn’t even care about the scenery. Considering the amazing beauty north and south of this road, for us, it really wasn’t worth it. We would recommend the road east of here to anyone doing it again!

They invented an additional price tag for the east route 25bol p.p. for “maintenance”.
The route took us little over 2h to the northern exit (in a Land Rover Defender). Conditions are ok here and there corrugations.

Regarding the last comment: As always, road conditions change. Wouldn't recommend driving here with a 2WD. Would highly recommand bringing a spare tire even if your tires are in good shape! Bring enough fuel, food, everything you need for cold nights around minus 15° Celsius.

If you are still unsere about the lagunas route. Check the Camera “prepare for lagunas route” in uyuni. Lots Of valuable Information.

Passable with any vehicle - especially during dry season. Can’t speak on what it’s like with wet grounds. It’s typically a washboard road with some deep grooves - these ruts can be avoided. We had no issues in our standard clearance & rear wheel drive Chevy (: We took the eastern route heading south from Villa Alota. We supplied and gassed up in Uyuni before heading down here, as options are very limited south of here. Our standard all terrain tires had a few bite marks from the rocks, so our only advice is to have tires in decent condition and/or bring a spare. It can be a tedious drive, but it’s worth it. Enjoy!

The road is still terrible from the moment you leave the main road. The 150 km route to Chile through the national park took us 3 days. We were driving average 10 km/h, sometimes more, sometimes even less as there is some deep sand during the whole road. Probably not deep enough to be problematic for cars, but enough to stop a motorcycle. We had some worse roads in Latin America, but not that long. Views are nice, but nothing too special. Check if you have correct date on the entrance ticket to the park, when we were buying it, the lady gave us one from previous days, so instead of three days in the park we had only one.
Passable, but with a lot of determination ><

I don't know where this person drove from to get there, but the road has been just as bad the 150km before this. Yeah, it's bad, but any car can do it as long as your vehicle is in good condition and you expect to go slow (between 10 and 20km/h). There is a few hostels along the way where tours stop, but the camp spots we had in this area are some of the best we had in south america and are definitely worth it! It's cold and windy, though, so be ready to hide in the blankets as soon as the sun goes down!
