Description

There are several free campsites in the New River Gorge. We stayed one night at the Army Camp campground. All of the sites have a picnic table&fire ring. There is a toilet, but no potable water, just the river nearby. Very nice spot. Check out this page for more infos about all of the campgrounds in the New River Gorge:

Descriptions are accurate. Large rigs (>25’) will have trouble with narrow (single lane) road and tight turns. Get here early as it’s small and fills up fast. If it’s full and you’re tired, park in large lot by bathroom (see photo). Vault toilets clean and well-stocked; grounds clean and well-groomed. Incredibly beautiful place.

arrived around 4-5pm. only 3 spots left, less than 10 spots total. prepare for no service except a possible weak signal by the pit toilets! there are firepits and metal picnic tables. right on the river so you can hear the water at night. car, tent, and rig friendly!

i can definitely see this place filling up in summertime.

Beautiful riverside campground. Still free, still first come first serve. Stayed here two nights. Friendly neighbors, only saw a park ranger drive by once.

Bit tricky to get here with a larger rig, we are 26.5ft. Road is part paved, part gravel, but the paved part is a little rough a couple potholes that require a bit of slow driving and maneuvering.

primitive campground, east short walk to river, water clear. Some rapids some areas calmer - there is a current be careful. Dog friendly. You can not see the River from the campground you need to walk to it, it’s an easy short walk. Toilet and no running water or electricity. A few spots for drive in camping, area is gravel, some grassy spots for tent set up.

Never been here before and I'm liking it so far. It's along a river and has about 8 campsites with picnic tables, grills and fire pits. Most spots are gravel and level. This place also has restrooms and trash. no water but the closest store is a 15 min drive. no tmobile cell service. Also has handicapped spots that are huge.

desolate. very small road going in. not wide enough for cars to pass. 5 spots open on Monday night.. nice place. starlink did not like the trees, but is good in day use area

Report Check-In

Great spot at the river bottom except when someone runs their generator non-stop. Fire rings and tables but only 7 FCFS sites. Was full Easter Sunday eve by 7 PM. No cell service but open views for Starlink.

Report Check-In

Cool spot on the New River! No outdoor lighting, so it’s very dark there which is great for night time photos! No shower or water but there are pit toilets that are clean. About 11 or so spots that have table, fire ring and lantern posts.

Report Check-In

A few campsites near each other in a clearing by the river. Plenty of availability when I arrived at night. I was able to get a clear view of the sky for unobstructed Starlink connectivity.

Small but well established campground. Near the river but not on it. The locals are incredibly nice and love to chat. One guy even dropped off firewood, just because. We spent two nights and it was perfect for us.

Free disperses camping in New River Gorge NP. About 11 spots for tents, vans or small RV’s. Really nice spots near the river. Fire pits and grills. Pit bathrooms. No running water or cell service.

Report Check-In

Easy to get to with car/small camper. Single lane paved/gravel road. I think 9 spots with 1 handicapped spot. All spots shaded. Clean pit toilet bathroom.

Report Check-In

We stayed 4 nights. Peaceful. You can easily get away with parking in the day use area for a night till a spot opens up.

Free camping with bathroom, fire pit, bench, and level parking area in national park. First come, first serve. Need signal booster to get a few bars. Otherwise no reception. Beautiful spot near the river with a trail off to the parking lot.

great spot and open year round! free and first come first serve. can’t beat it. i stayed two nights, both times there was just one another van. super quiet. i did have enough service with verizon to shoot a few texts out. but don’t rely on having service.

Report Check-In

3 open spots when I came in around 6pm on a Thursday evening. Very quiet. I’m in a self contained van so I did not use the toilets. Spots are clean, overgrown between the sites. Some privacy but not a ton. People seemed to keep to themselves. There is a day use area with a little “beach” by the river. The day use picnic area is handicapped accessible, and well kept / clean. If you show up late and there aren’t any sites available and you are self contained, it would seem fine to stay in the medium sized parking lot for the day use area. Lots of space there to sleep but it’s not a “camping” area. It’s free. No complaints. Would stay here again.

NO DATA SERVICE AT ALL even with a booster for ATT, Verizon, TMobile. I could sporadically and unreliably get enough service to send a text and probably a phone call but that’s it. And it dropped out constantly.

Report Check-In

Arrived on a Thursday afternoon and about half the campsites were taken. We found a nice spot that easily fit our 14” travel trailer plus tow vehicle. The only thing that was sketch was the very narrow residential road leading up to it. Larger rigs will have troubles getting through.

Very quiet but get there early sires fill up
Also no internet!
TMobile or Verizon

Report Check-In

Great spot to camp! There is a day use area with picnic tables and grills and about 9 camp spots each with their own picnic table and fire pit. Pit toilets that are clean. Trash can available.

When we first arrived, all the spots were taken so we just parked in a quiet corner of the day use area.
The next morning, a few spots became available but we stayed in our little corner for 1 more night because we really liked it. Also because We have a fully contained van and we saw lots of tent campers and wanted them to be able to have the camp spots.

We enjoyed relaxing by the River and walking a short trail nearby.

No cell signal with Verizon.

We arrived midday and had the place to ourselves until around 6 on when a few others showed up. No cell signal. Very quiet. Nice to sit on beach and watch river flow by.

Great little spot by the river. Fire pits, picnic tables, and restrooms. Trash cans available near the restrooms. Free, quiet, and clean!

Came in late on a Friday about 9pm. only spots left was a handicapped site so we stayed there for just the night. it is a nice free camp ground but the grass was high enough to mow for hay. would definatly stay agian if we were in the area.
