Description

Campsite with bush baño, table, and a wooden structure for viewing los oso. Administrator Danilo Vásquez is very welcoming. Charged $20 pp for a night (children 10 and over, pay too). We spent hours watching two mother bears with cubs. You need a good set of binoculars and for photos a good lens. Fantastic experience.

Very nice area, the canyon, the mountains are beautiful. We camped here one night and we have seen around 10 bears the evening (including one mum and her 2 cubs) and 4 bears the morning. The bears are on the opposite side of the mountain, and the best way is to look the avocado field where they come to eat some. They are not really close, take your binoculars. Just a regret, the price has increased (sorry doubled!!!) since January. Now it's 20$US per person, children aged 10 and over pay too. In our case we succeed to negotiate to pay 15$US per adult and children free. About the campsite (included in the price), it is nice, you camp juste beside the observation platform, but the access is only for small vehicle. There are toilet and potable water. The road to come here is a dirt road, not so bad but it will be very difficult for big rig to park and turn around, I don't recommend. For the kids there is a zipline, guaranteed success! Claro signal is really poor.

We drove down very next to the mirador with our truck. 2,5m wide, 3,5m height and 7,5m long without problems. It’s worth driving down. Here you camp next to the mirador and we saw a few „oso andino“. Very nice! 10 dollar per adult….

We were lucky to see an adult bear, just amazing! Danielo the owner is very friendly and helped us spot the bear. The access road until the small church can be driven by any vehicle. Large rigs can stay in front of the church (may be not on weekends?), from where it is a 5 minutes walk to the viewpoint. The short road down to the viewpoint and camping area splits shortly after a left turn: going straight leads trough a narrow ally of trees (suitable for smaller cars), going down to the right has no width/ height limitations. The price for 2 adults and a campervan is 20 per night.

We spent an afternoon and the next morning here. Seen a lot of these wonderful bears. For us it was a great experience. You need binoculars the bears are on the opposite side of the gorge. Danilo asked 10$ per person, but camping was included. Beautiful, quiet spot. Owner Danilo told us a lot of intetesting things about the bears. He was part of a TV documentary about them a few years back. Don't miss this attraction!!! Might be difficult to get down to the spot with very big vehicles.

Not sure why nobody else mentioned the giant swing (awesome) or the monster-sized teeter-totter (mildly horrifying) at the campsite... Danilo was happy to let us play for a bit on them. Plus, we saw a mama bear and two cubs frolicking on the hillside!!!! Danilo took is on a trail down the canyon to get a closer look. Very peaceful sleep. Highly recommend!

Very nice camp with a tower built for watching bear across the canyon. Owner very friendly and always trying to assist with anything you need. Cost is 20USD for 2+2 and a car for night and bear watching.
The road is good and well marked, but doesn’t appear to be on satnav maps. Follow the road that MR Google suggests but after couple of kilometers after Pimampiro there is a right turn. It’s all well marked and not very far away from the Pan-American Highway.

Camping directly at the Mirador del Oso Andino. Here you have a very good chance to see the rare spectacled bear!
Danilo Vásquez is the owner and administrator of the place. He lives there but it‘s better to let him know that you come in advance, so he can show you around and be your guide to find the bears. We payed 10$pp for the tour and the camping. He has also cabañas to rent.

How to get there, as the road is not on maps.me:
Leave the Panamericana at el Juncal and drive to Pimapiro. From here follow the brown signs to Mirador del Oso Andino OR the sings Ruta Vértigo. The road is cobblestone and some parts gravel in good condition.
