We drove the route from Vicuña to Coquimbo. No 4x4 necessary if it is dry. With our 2WD Fiat Ducato absolutely no problem. Great route, great fun. If you like curves, this is the right place.

Nice road through the green valley, almost only curves. Great with a motorcycle. A lot of houses along the road.
Until Hurtado all paved. From Hurtado to Vicuña it is an offroad pass. Good condition, but you can't go too fast on the first half (4x4 necessary). Second half on Vicuña side was freshly prepared, no loose gravel. You can go fast on that part. From Hurtado to Vicuña it took us 90min by motorcycle.
