This is a beautiful spot. Quite wild. No facilities really (what is there is in needs of serious repairs).

Some good hiking too. You can go to the peak and back in about 4-5hrs. The crater loop is 24km. You will need a lot of water.

Having said that, it is crazy expensive. For non residents they want $30pp as entry fee and on top of that 1000kes pppn for camping.

We did not have that money and negotiated the 3000+1000kes as indicated by previous campers. Your mileage may vary but ask for a better price.

It is community managed so it’s not always clear who you should be paying. Ask for receipt.

We found David to be the most easy to deal with: 0700148521.

If coming from Naro, do not use the Google map route. We had a defender and still, at times, we were not sure if we should continue. Go via Suswa (40’ from tarmac road) or Ngong (26’ from the tarmac road, divert from Olgumi). David can direct you.

Another nice local is Moses (0727 210 815) who can offer guided tours around the area.

Mt Suswa is incredibly beautiful and we did a fantastic hike to the highest peak around the crater, 4 hours in total, a bit of up and down but not too challenging and stunning views. It is possible to do this as a day trip from Nairobi but we stayed 1 night in the basic conservancy camp. There is a long drop toilet and a great view over the escarpment but nothing else! We had our own firewood and are self sufficient and loved it, it was very windy in the night but we were literally perched on the escarpment. The next morning we went to the lava caves, a 3 hour trip, 40 mins to drive, an hour or so in the caves and 40 mins or so back to the main road. It is quite pricey to do all this but the money does apparently go to the community. Costs for us as non residents were in Ksh
1500 motorbike fee for guiding up to the campsite (where you start the hike) and then the next day to the caves and down to the road
1000 pp per day so 4000 for guides
1000pppn camping
500 for vehicle
3500 pp conservancy fees one off payment
The guides were very very nice and knowledgeable, a great experience, but please note the tracks up and down are very rugged and require a decent 4x4 vehicle with good tyres.

The road from Duka Moja has been remapped due land subdivisions get information from locals as you go up

Report Check-In

we used the Duca Moja road from the west. For rig rugs it might be sometime a but narrow. It's a spectacular crater with fantastic views and hiking trails. A lot of steam activity all arround. We also saw fresh leopard tracks around. Facilities are run down but they
will bring you water if you need.

Report Check-In

Very nice and calm place! Campsite in good condition. Beautiful view! We stayed 2 days with a hike to the summit. Road from the north side very rocky and challenging but beautiful. Duka Moja Road is ok in dry season.

Report Check-In

Previous description accurate. Great quiet place with helpful Maasai. Firewood provided was green and wet so required a lot of maintenance but otherwise ok. There are 2 roads to go up, as of Dec 2019, both side roads have been damaged by heavy rains of past months. The road up on Duka Moja side was the most passable (as per Maasai guide) but was still a good challenge. Went up easily in a 4x4 (Jeep Wrangler), other people going up in a Nissan X-trail had to be recovered and pushed to make it up the volcano.
