Pull off from road south of Socaire. Free and no facilities, great views of the Salar de Atacama and surrounded by volcanoes. Cold at night in the winter though, as it is at 3,600m.

We stop here to have our lunch.
We enjoy a lot, view on the mountains and many birds.
A little bit windy.
Great place for rock climbing! And lots of routes, both sports and trad.
We tried to ask permission to the community president first (Not Daniel anymore: the new one is Leonardo Cruz, tel 932440133) but haven't been able to find or contact him. We climbed anyway, and camped in the gravel pit a bit further on the road.
The wind is very strong around here, it can get pretty cold because of that.
Just as a note, if you plan to climb here you need to check with the Socaire community president (Daniel) to get permission first. we tried unsuccessfully for 3 days to speak to him but wasn't available but check at the little artesian shop in Socaire. We ended up climbing in secret for 4 days but noone bothered us. We didnt stay here though as its very visible - much better up the road a few km's at the gravel pit site :)
Report Check-Inbeautiful views of the volcanos, great sunset. Just follow the tiny entance road a bit down. It will take you away from the street and out of sight. Ends befor a tiny creek.
Report Check-InWe camped 200m from here near the river, extremely beautiful and covered from the road. The next morning we discovered camping next to the river is not allowed. Great area but avoid standing next to the river.
Report Check-InVery quiet spot even though close to the road. Good climbing nearby, detailes topos can be found at www.guiaescalachile.com/2012/08/socaire.html
