Description

Prehistoric trackways is a national monument under BLM management. On this large gravel parking lot, you can stay overnight during 14 days. It is very quiet at night, there are a few other cars during the day. Nice hiking possibilities. They offer a free organised hike every 3th Saturday of the month, searching for prehistoric foothprints.
Before you arrive on this parking lot, there is a smaller one, that also can be used overnight. Most day hikers use this one.

Gorgeous spot! Beautiful view of the mountains. A little crowded but if you figure out a good spot to park you barely notice!

Report Check-In

a wonderful large flat parking area. no problem in my 32ft motorhome. road coming in is good. smaller trailhead parking first but keep going to this spot. great trails and very peaceful.

Great BLM/National Monument dispersed camping.
First night parked at OHV lot. About 9 PM 5-6 cars of “hippies” pulled in, and were super loud until 1 AM. I moved the next day to close to the entrance.
Lots of spots for campers. Great trails to hike.
Up to 14 days free camping.
8 minutes to nearest Circle K, and about 20 minutes to a Walmart and everything you’d find in a medium sized city.
Over the weekend, only saw a few off road vehicles.
Very quiet, with some coyotes later in the night howling.
Desert landscape, with some windy days. Stayed here 5 nights.

Great spot. We parked in the large flat lot. Quiet. A few campers. Hiked the trails- very nice. Would stay again. Clean and safe

as described. easy to find and easy to access. 2 bars of 4g verizon with a booster. great spot for me to land in the dark after running errands in las cruces. there were a couple rvs lots of space reasonably flat. woke to snow flurries and relentless wind. looks like there is hiking but I wasn't inclined to explore

I ended up past the parking lots about 1/4 mile. Quiet and flat spot. Easy to get to in my Promaster. Enough cell signal to work and watch a movie. Stayed 2 nights.

Report Check-In

Great spot. There is a large fenced in gravel lot, but then another flat gravel spot with a small firepit right next to it. Our 40ft skoolie fit in that spot perfectly, and had zero issues going down to road to get to it. This is a popular spot for off-road vehicles during the weekend, but we were here during the week and it was pretty quiet. Lots of hiking in the area. We heard a lot of coyotes throughout the night, every night, so be careful with pets.

Report Check-In

Great spot for quick access to BLM land. Pretty busy on the weekend days with hikers and off road vehicles. Lots of space for multiple rigs. We parked at the bigger lot a little farther up, but I think 4x4 vehicles could go beyond that as there are multiple pull offs but the road gets rough.

Super dope spot! Only 15/20 minutes from I10. Soft gravel parking lot where the dog could get out his energy after a long drive.
Good enough service to pop a little Netflix.

Very nice, we stayed here 3 nights no problems. Leveled big parking, no shade, no wc, low signal for t-mobile. Very quite, we eard some gunshots one night, and coyotes the night before. We sow a prairy dog just close to our van.

Quiet, weekend warriors come off-roading with their Jeeps, nice flat spots for larger rigs

Really top notch, low stress option for dry camping. we stayed here a week and were quite comfortable.

The first lot on the right is the discovery trail parking lot and trailhead. Very small and gets lots of day traffic from hikers, bikers, and dog walkers. Not big enough for a motorhome or trailer. A 1000 feet past that on the left is the main square dirt/sand parking lot where we stayed.

When we arrived Sunday afternoon there were 3 RVs and one day-use pickup truck parked in there. Also one RV just past that lot and another one just past that. There was space for maybe 10 RVs if you park them smartly, without being super cramped. There was a full-size schoolie in there with room to spare.

It was quiet and felt super safe, especially with a few other RVs around. We felt safe enough to leave our doors unlocked (not that you should, just saying).

There were always a handful of daytime visitors parking their cars to go on hikes, but never very noisy. Everywhere around you is a hike opportunity! Our dog loved it, especially finding tons of little animal bones out on the trails. None of the trails have shade, so it probably gets pretty brutal in the summer.

There seemed to be 2-3 long term RVers there, but lots of other folks came and went for a night or two.

Most of the trails are totally safe, but there are several sections fairly littered with broken glass. This seems like an unfortunate trend with BLM land. Be careful with your dog or children. But there are plenty of cute cows roaming around and grazing on the trails, which is fun.

We only went into town once, which was a 10-15 min drive. We would definitely come back!

Beautiful, quiet large gravel lot. Spent one night here. There were 4 other vans.

Awesome quiet and peaceful spot to stay for a night or two. Lots to explore, and we really enjoyed it.

We followed the gps coordinates and google maps took us to a school in Dona Ana. Which is a dead end. So we put in the name of this place and then they got us right here. It’s a safe, quiet and peaceful place for a night or two.

Report Check-In

Great location just outside of Las Cruces. Quiet at night. 2 bars of service on Verizon. Other campers were nearby. I felt safe.

Report Check-In

This is a great spot!!!!! I just visited during the day and I’m moving on and not staying tonight but I’m checking in because i want to stay here in the future. This is exactly the kind of spot I normally look for!

Report Check-In

As previously stated. Nice spot. Good trails. Quiet location. Good cell signal.

Report Check-In

Lots of camping options here. Large gravel lot is easy to access and smooth. As you continue, the road deteriorates. High clearance and 4x4 could be required depending on weather conditions. But if you can get to the back, you’ll have private camping. Note: this camping is by the ATV trails. So while your nights will be quiet, your days may not be during peak season.

Report Check-In

Quite, two other Campers here last night.

Report Check-In

Great spot for a few nights. Second parking area big enough for any size. Hiking around as well. Good AT&T service. If you are in a 4WD you can continue past the parking area and camp anywhere you want. Got a little busier on the weekend, but the nights were very quiet.

Report Check-In

Attempted to come to this spot, made it to the smaller parking area mentioned in the first comment. There was a rut in the dirt road leading in that was too deep for our 26 ft class C so we turned around.

Report Check-In

Beautiful place! Really easy to find, right off a paved road. Stayed in the first parking lot off the dirt road. Small bumps but nothing to worry about. Lots of people here during the day before we left (10am) Not as close to the Rio grande as i hoped. Rating this a 8/10.

Report Check-In

Good spot with a lot of space. Super quiet.

Report Check-In

very quiet, dark and peaceful. one dude in an RV here, but parking in the lower lot so have plenty of space. road was easy

Nice place, plenty of room, pretty level. Very quiet.

Report Check-In

Great location, quiet, peaceful, after dark no traffic from hikers. Easy dirt road -- huge washes so be careful if rain in forecast! Woke up to a later of ice in windshield -- it gets cold out here in Dec. Excellent verizon signal.

Report Check-In

Great place to stay. Super easy to bop into Las Cruces for gorditas at Saenz Gorditas, the library or to check out Mesilla.

I stayed here for five days in June. The Rio Grande had water running and there was an easy spot to jump in just up the road on Shalem Colony Road.

There was were a few hikers, bikers and off roaders coming and going but nobody bothered me and the nights were peaceful

Report Check-In

Exactly as described, large level gravel parking lot. Nice walk up the ridge line from the trailhead, beautiful views. Also really great info about the trackways. Very nice quiet, dark spot for a night while passing through Las Cruces.

Report Check-In
