Something not right?

Description

This is a big gravel pit/old quarry that is part of the National Recreation area, tucked up off the main road, immediate area is just a pit but you are in a valley surrounded by trees, lots of space. Several private spots if you keep going up the road a bit further than there initial clearing.

Looks like the local yokels use this area as a shooting gallery sometimes, yeeehaw!

Picked up a little bit of ATT LTE down at the lower pits.

Latest Check-Ins

Set up here around 6 on a weeknight and not long after some locals pulled up and set up their target shooting right next to me despite there being quite a few spots in the quarry. Some of the other spots further up were already occupied by other target shooters but I still thought it was pretty rude. Packed up and went down to the day use area until after dark when they were all gone.

This is definitely open! Couple different spots to camp in old quarry. Don’t be intimidated by the hill off of the highway, this place is a great stop just outside of redwoods! Locals definitely use it to shoot, started at about 9:30 the morning we were there. Otherwise we were the only ones all night with no disturbances

Report Check-In

I think it is closed. Saw no camping signs near the location

Report Check-In

This was a nice place until the shooting started. Turns out that right up the road is a hotspot for locals to practice shooting. The whole area is littered with shells and other trash. The gravel road getting up is steep but doable. Great solar and Starlink, but wouldn't stay again due to the shooting.

Stayed here one night, had dinner at the day use spot across road (where the toilet is) and then came up here to sleep, we were the only ones there. Nothing pretty but convenient location to Redwoods parks. Heaps of space.

Report Check-In

Good quiet space for 1 night, as they are limited boondocking areas. We like the privacy and being near the state park. No shooting on a Tuesday morning.

Report Check-In

Stayed here last night. 2WD accessible. Plenty of space for multiple vehicles or trailers. Nothing pretty about this site, looks like it’s mostly used for target practice, although not as trashed as I would have assumed for a shooting range. Got one bar ATT LTE intermittently. Well off the main road and quiet at night.

20 minutes from Crescent City. Go up the steep gravel road to the right off the road. I drove up and all the way back to the top. Nice quiet and very peaceful. A hunter came up just before dark near where I was to sight in his rifle for about 15-20min. Nice guy, not ideal but no biggie. Quiet, peaceful night. Woke up to gunfire at about 9:30am on a Friday morning. Not so ideal. There are pit toilets 3min down the road at the fishing pull off. I left this spot and drove down there to make breakfast and get ready for the day. Would recommend overall but don’t plan on staying more than 1 night.
