Latest Check-Ins

No toilet paper
No soap
No generator and cut off lights
With groups and rain it is dirty in the ablutions
For the price it is the worst ratio quality / price in all Africa. (Almost 150 dollars us with two children). Even savuti was better.
But you do not have the choice if you want to go Serengeti and ngorongoro.

Public camp site at the top of the crater

Good campsite but a few large groups. Parked on the far side away from groups with view overlooking crater (through trees). Good clean facilities and hot shower. Zebra, buffalo and bush buck graze on the site in the evening - v habituated. Significantly colder up here though.

Nice campsite. Plenty of grass to pitch a tent. With a rooftop tent you should ask where to park your truck, better if you ask to be away from the tours (although you LL be far from the toilets). You can get wood for a fire (ask the warden and they will tell you who to ask, it cost us 30k shillings ). We had buffalos around the truck at night and the rangers came to say hi and warn us not to get out of the tent at night because of the buffalos.

not a bad campsite. You can park anywhere. There is a very small view over the crater. Showers were cold in the day but hot at night. Toilets only squat toilets I think but we only checked one block so maybe the others were Western! There's a few big kitchen areas which the tour operators use but there will be extra space, and also a small shop for coffees, ice cream, snacks beer chocolate etc. They can provide lots of wood for a fire but very expensive.

Report Check-In

Showers are hot at the end of the day / early morning. $3 for a cold beer.

Ngorongoro Crater public camp site. Flat grassy area for tents and great view of the crater. Toilets, hot showers, cook kitchen, dining area. New coffee bar, ice cream, and beer. Cools off at night.

Stayed here 2 nights. We were pleasantly surprised by the hot showers and clean abblutions and the overal set up of the sites. It is a big grassy field, but as Overlander you get a place with a view of the crater away from all the big safari groups. Local Maasai guard the place can make a fire on request.

Basic camp site on the rim of the crater.. When we camped here there were a few safari companies with guests as well.. I believe this site can get busy as it is the most popular site because of the view. As you drive into the camp most of the safari companies camp on the right side but we found a great quiet spot with direct view on the crater. When you enter the site continue with the road and it will take you around a big tree to the left hand side of the camp.. There is a nice big tree next to the ablution block.. The ablution facilities are however not great at all.. All the drains for the showers in the ladies bathroom was blocked and when i advised the caretaker he just shrugged his shoulders.. Definitely not worth the money you pay for but I guess the view should make up for it 😉

Cost to enter Ngorongoro
USD60 per person per day (24 hour cycle)
USD177 per vehicle per day (2001 to 3000 ton)
USD 30 per person per night for camp

Public Campsite for Ngorogoro. To stay here you need to pay park fees but not necessarily the crater toll fee.

Large grassy area with some view into the crater. Had zebra, hyena, Elephant in the camp.

Western toilets and very hot showers! 2 sets of ablution blocks on opposite ends of the campsite but this place can get very busy!

Firewood can be negotiated with the camp attendant. Note it gets very cold here!

Ngorogoro is very expensive.
Camping USD30 pppn
Conservation USD60 ppd
Car USD40 pd (less than 2 tons)
Toll for 24hours inside the crater 250USD per car
All the above add 18% VAT.

Ngorogoro Rangers are also very strict so make sure you know which roads you may or may not drive. Looks like they will start forcing people to take a guide if they want to selfdrive in the crater.

We were lucky that only 2 groups and one other overlander was staying for the night. Ablutions are actually not that bad, was expecting worse. In hindsight, with what we did in our 24h we could have slept outside the park, but the big group of buffalo visiting us during the night was very cool.

Report Check-In

Large campsite overlooking the crater. Lovely sunrise view on a clear day. Very busy. Not enough bathrooms to keep up. No garbages so they’re filthy. Long shower line. The free wifi was too overwhelmed to work.

Report Check-In

We thought it was a great campsite with a fantastic view from the crater side. Buffalos grazing next to the car and elephants woke us up in the morning. Showers were hot and it was very quiet (low season still). You can get out of the campsite just before 6 allowing an early sunrise entry into the crater. It’s expensive but you’re already bankrupt after paying the crater fee! Go for afternoon tea/drinks at the nearby Serena lodge - they welcome visitors and the view is amazing.

Report Check-In

Stayed here on 3 day/2 night Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater tour. We were told the cost is $40 + vat so $47.2 pppn. If you're doing a self drive I don't think it's worth staying here, it's very crowded with tour companies, there's not much of a view and it's very cold and foggy. Long queues for the showers and they're cold.

Report Check-In

beautiful grass and views. elephants and water buffs in the Campground, but rangers keep them back. yes, it's pricey, but get over it - once in a lifetime visit. we would definitely come back.

Report Check-In

High price for dirty facilities. The public camp site Ngiri in the Serengeti Park was much nicer for the same money.

Report Check-In

Ablutions basic (only cold water) but clean. Many groups camp here too. Great location on crater rim and close (15km) to crater entrance (west side).

Report Check-In

The new abolition block is finished and they did a good job. Still overpriced at 30usd pppn but your best option if you want to go in the crater as early as possible.

Report Check-In

Nice view. A lot of groups camp here. Fortunatly they just built a new shower/toilet block. But not realy worth the 30$ pp you pay. I would try to get one of the private sites, even when they go for 50$ pp.

Report Check-In

On crater rim of Ngorongoro, spectacular view, we did not visit toilets and showers, 30 USD PP
