Description

Feb 2022 update: dog rescue is currently not running at this location!
Do a little good! Wonderful dog/cat rescue in set up in the highlands. Really a great place to visit particularly if you are a dog lover. There is a communal house for access to bathrooms (showers), kitchen, WiFi, etc. Gated and secure parking places available in the yard under some beautiful fruit trees. Electric may be available with a long extension cord. Not really suited to big rigs but great for small to medium (I’m traveling in a full size truck with pop-top camper). Lots of hiking trails close by, may also be a good option for parking if you plan to hike Chirripo. The rescue is always in need of good volunteers for dog walks and chores around the house. You can stay without volunteering but the dogs are so cute I doubt you’ll want to. I stayed 2 weeks and loved my time here! Watching the dogs and puppies change and grow is priceless. I also travel with a dog and having him with me was no problem (dogs must be good with other dogs and cats). Price: $10.00/night. Fee goes DIRECTLY back into the animal rescue so you know it is going to a good place.

We contacted Charlie's angels Animal rescue via their FB page and they told us they don't have a shelter anymore they are just working with foster homes now. So we didn't stay as we wanted to volunteer for them.

La Casita on the property is a clean and cozy two bedroom, one bath cabin. Shared use of the fully equipped kitchen, living room, and bathroom. We booked through the Airbnb website and had the entire casita to ourselves.

A dog rescue is operated out of the main house on the property.

We came for one night ended up staying three. We loved it. The place is currently run by a volunteer couple who have been there for 7 months. They were travelling too and “got stuck” there, so watch out!! They are doing a wonderful job. The dogs are happy and well cared for. There were 23 dogs there, including 8 puppies and 2 paraplegic dogs, which I fell in love with. Nothing is expected of you if you stay, but if you want to help out you can. We walked the puppies and I walked the disabled ones. Yes they can walk, well in fact they can run!! They don’t seem to have any idea their back legs don’t work. We paid 10/night and I left a little extra for the dogs.
The area is also breathtakingly beautiful, the most beautiful area we’ve been to in Costa Rica so far.

This is a fantastic place to stay- has everything you need, while donating to a charity at the same time. They are doing great work for very little reward and I’m sure the staff would appreciate people stopping by to say hi, or donate time or money :)
