Description

Amazing FREE, First come first serve. 7 day max campground at Balanced Rock County Park. Situated on Salmon Falls Creek, there are roughly a dozen sites nestled in a gorge between two cliff walls. Beautiful area, somewhat busy on weekends but not all that bad. Pit toilets, trash cans, fire rings, grills and plenty of tent camping on the green grass (tenting on grass ONLY on weekends) Potable water available, but it tastes like it has a lot of calcium in it. Just be aware of the sprinklers that automatically turn on between 10pm and 10am (or as needed) every weekday. No cell service. Apparently great fishing too! Short hiking trail at the end of the area - awesome!

Free, first come first serve. 7 days max in 30 day period. No camping on grass Monday thru Thursday. (It would be a gravel parking style camping then, so fine for vans or rvs) No cell reception in the park at all. But if you drive a couple minutes up you can find some. Flys are still here!

Most recent posters commented about some other recent occupants of the campsite that were passed and lots of beer cans everywhere. Looks like we just missed them. Trash cans were full of empties. But now it seems the park had young families and a few retired couples here. Definitely a different crowd that what was supposedly here just a few short weeks ago. Got cleared out? Or stayed their time and moved on? Either way. Glad we came to stay. This place is a gem!

Nice, but way too many flies. Cell coverage drops as soon as you pull in. Not for me, but in a pinch would do.

We pulled into an amazing small park and left. There was an older woman in s tent with a Rottweiler and a pile of about 30-40 beer cans. There were also a woman and man passed out in the front seats of a truck. Not sleeping but passed out! We also had about 30 flies all over our hood and windshield. Didn’t even bother to get out. Its a shame cause it is a beautiful place. Hopefully not as sketch when you visit.

This place is STUNNING! So much beauty sleeping between the rocks and under the stars. Bathrooms. You can paddle board on the salmon river. Easy to get to with no harsh roads. So nice to have shade after some hot summer afternoons

what a pleasant surprise! just as OP stated, this is a gem of a free spot. the canyon is lovely and secluded. saw a couple kayaks in the creek. had no problem finding a spot on a Sunday night. two campers and several picnics that left at dark. lots of opportunity for birding. heard lots of unfamiliar birdsong. and enjoyed watching the swallows at dusk. as others have mentioned, the biting flies are bad. stayed one night on my way thru Idaho

Still here and free, beautiful campground. No markings in terms of camp sites or day use / camp areas, seems to be more of a "squeeze in where you can" situation. Small rvs and vans should have no problems finding a spot to stop for the night even if the place is full.

Zero cell reception for att or verizon. Trash bins and pit toilets here.

Free. Pit toilet, water and trash. Beautiful rock formations. Flies were terrible. There were 4 campers but 1 left, stating "the flies won". We stayed 1 night and moved on.

Report Check-In

Beautiful location between huge rock formations.

Picnic tables, swings, BBQ and fire pits, lazy river, grass and trees.

Moments from Balanced Rock

No WiFi or cell service

This is such a great camp spot for free!! Probably not for you if you want to be alone, there were a lot of other campers while I was here. But I got to pitch a tent next to the grass & had a fire pit & picnic table, there are restrooms & swings & a horseshoe pit! Great trees to put up my hammock & right on the river, beautiful rock formations also! A quick mile hike to see the balanced rock & just a half hour drive to Twin Falls. I wanted to stay longer but the wind got way too bad on my third day, ended up heading out early but hopefully I’ll be back!

Nice state park but crowded since it's so narrow. would make a great overnite site.

Great spot . Short hiking trail at the end of the campground. The ‘balance rock ‘ is a short drive west on the right of the road . Worth hiking or taking the OHV vehicle to go see it the balance rock

Beautiful picnic spots in the canyon along a creek. Could be very peaceful or quite loud dependent upon your neighbors. Sounds magnify in the canyon. Tents only allowed on grass Monday-Thursday.

Great spot to stay for a night or two - that’s free! Windy in the afternoon but it died down around 6pm. The canyon gorge and creek setting was a beautiful setting. MAJOR FLIES! There were about 60 in the van during the 15 minutes we had the van doors open. Lots of Great Horned Owls that we could spot from the top of the ridges. Hike the Balanced Rock trails down the road.

Great little camp spot in a canyon. Rocks on either side and a little running creek through it. There were toilets and covered park benches. We got there late on a Sunday night and there were about 5-7 other camp sites taken. But we found one no problem. It was perfect for staying the night and going to miracle hot springs in the morning just 20 minutes away.

Free, clean, and beautiful as described.

Cute little park along a stream and sandwiched between rock faces. Picnic tables and fireplaces, but no *real* campsites. Would be a great swimming hole in the summer. Very windy. There were a stream of cars pulling into the park while we were there, day and night, bur nobody stayed, kind of made us feel unsafe as we were unsure what they were doing. We got snowed out on 2nd day and left, didn't want to get stuck at the bottom of the steep road.

Great little spot. It is very dark at night so lots of stars, although sight obviously limited since it’s in a gorge (or valley?). It was Very windy. Nice pit toilets, there is even a pavilion with swings & great view.

Awesome place just as OP stated. We camped on a Saturday , still were a few open spots. Would’ve thought it would be a lot more busy . Very quiet and calming.
