Latest Check-Ins

We were coming from Barcelona with GNV. Immigration and vehicle registration was done on the ferry. In the port we just followed the signs to the exit. At the end there was a customs check where they scan your car. Afterwards you can exit the port. Directly after you exit you can find ATMs and buy insurance and SIM cards.

Arrival port for vehicle ferry from Algeciras. Easy place to begin Moroccan journey from. Follow signs for exit after disembarking. There is a vehicle scanner and drug dog checks at customs where vehicles are processed and small credit card sized paper given for vehicle. Ours had 6 month validity.

Important notes:

1) Coming from Genoa/Barcelona, Morocco immigration is done on the ferry.

2) Vehicle customs is also done on the ferry, but my USA registration 'wasn't in the system' so I had to do vehicle customs upon arrival in the port. It appears the same was true for a couple Italian motorcycles, too.

3) Temporary importation process took about 3 mins and the customs agent spoke perfect English. Cost: FREE!

4) Insurance is available at the port immediately after exit: ~€60/10day and ~€96/30day, for motorcycles. I believe the prices are the same for cars.

5) ATMs available next to insurance office.

6) They do not check for insurance upon leaving the port, so you can comparison shop at other places in Morocco, though from my online research prices are apparently about the same everywhere.

7) Contrary to my advance online research, it IS possible to leave Morocco without your vehicle. There is no Moroccan customs stamp in your passport. You receive a small slip of paper--don't lose it! I explicitly asked the customs agent and he said yes I can leave Morocco without my motorcycle but the motorcycle must still leave Morocco before the granted period expires.

8) The granted period for my motorcycle was 6 months (29Feb to 28Aug). My granted (immigration) entry is 3 months.

9) The coastal route to Tangier through small towns takes almost exactly as long as the toll road, but it's free, it's shorter distance (less gas), and the views are amazing.

10) Moroccan drivers are courteous and relatively slow, much like in Tunisia. Much safer to ride here than anywhere between Italy and Vladivostok.

Fill in your exit paper and you get your passport stamped.
Only at the scan you have to get out of your vehicle.

Arrived at port at 10.15pm and parked up behind the ticket office building with many other motorhomes, campervans and overlanders. The restaurant was still open but didn’t eat there and a good security presence all night. Quiet night ready for the long drive south in the morning
