Latest Check-Ins

Uzbekistan > Turkmenistan. We met our guide at the Turkmen border post. He arranged most of the administrative stuff.

First we paid for visa ($55 + $4 bank fee), migration tax ($10 + $4 bank fee), and rapid antigen covid test ($33). So total $106 per person.

Then on to the car stuff: vehicle desinfection ($1), entry & transit ($61), fuel cost ($119 for Uzbek border towards Iran border via gas crater), car insurance ($35), processing fee ($5), gps ($10 for 1 gps for the whole group of 4 cars), and bank fee ($4). So total $235 based on a Toyota Land cruiser.

Unfortunately the vans of our group (Volkswagen Crafter & Iveco Daily) were charged as trucks and thus had to pay a higher insurance and entry/transit fee.

The fees that Owadan provided us were not all correct. Same for the pamflet in the customs hall. So keep that in mind.

Whole process took about 4 hours with 4 vehicles.

Exit Turkmenistan:
Unorganized exit process but everyone was very friendly.
We should pay a fee of 5$, but after asking several times for the reason, we did not have to pay.
Just a very superficial car control.

Entry Uzbekistan:
No detailed car inspection.
We had to pay a fee of 3$.

When we entered Turkmenistan from Iran they drew a route for us on a map, which we had to follow until exiting. Unfortunately we didn’t double check that map and they put the KonyaUrench/Nukus border on the map, which we didn’t drive to as the road is supposedly very bad. So we had some discussions here, because they wanted us to drive back to the other border, which we refused. After going back and forth they finally let us go through this border. Only looked in the van shortly and payed $5 dollar exit fee.

The Uzbek side took a bit longer and they checked the van a bit more intensive. No questions about drones, but what kind of medicine we‘re bringing. $3 sanitation fee.

It seems we were the first overlanders since some years who crossed this border crossing. At the time when we travelled overlanders were only allowed to enter based on an invitation letter obtained via a travel agency. Our travel guide received us at the check point and helped us with the paperwork.
First step is a COVID test, then passport control, then the paper work for the car.
We paid some 300 USD for the test, the visa (which is issued based on the Letter of Invitation by the tour operator) and the car insurance.
Based on the LoI you agree with an official about your itinerary. Subsequently the official calculates the number of kilometers you plan to travel and you have to pay 20 cents (USD) per km you intend drive as a road toll. In our case it was 730 USD. Finally you car is searched and you are allowed to proceed. The process lasted about three hours.

We entered to Turkmenistan here. Very friendly and helpfull workers in the border. It wasn't the border we had to cross but they didn't say anything about it. We also came on the last day of our visa (mechanics trouble) so they tried to do everything as fast as possible. That was no way to reach Iran border on time so they recommended us to go to immigration office in Dasoguz to have an exit visa and extend it.

If you come here with a visa it's :
10$ for the entrance
4$ for bank service
Then you need to pay your car insurance and it depend of your car. For a Citroën jumper (<6m) we had to pay 163$ (+4$ bank service)

You can also directly ask for a visa here if you have your invitation letter :
55$ for the visa
10$ for the entrance
8$ for bank service
Then car insurance

Everything took 1h30 to enter Turkmenistan and no GPS on the car.
