Description

Description of crossing from Nicaragua to Honduras. There will of course be a truck lineup for about 5kms but eventually make your way forward and stop at white building. Show all vehicle documents and passports. They will give you Aduana form. Continue through chaos and find the immigration building aptly labelled "Banco Lafise"? Man with blue shirt will check aduana form and your vehicle (not much interest in finding anything). Go into immigration to officer on far side of square. Show passports and pay 45cordobas each to exit. Continue down passage to aduana- hand over all vehicle docs and TIP - which they keep. Drive towards Honduras- stop to give officer stamped aduana form and show receipt for exit tax. In Honduras stop at migracion (actually has a sign on the building!). Pay usd3 or 70limpura each. Find aduana - they will direct you to an office at the back where the SUPER unfriendly clerk will shuffle paperwork for the vehicle and take EXACTLY us$35 (for transit) as "she has no change" . You go over the road through a maze of trucks to find nice gentleman to make copies, go back to clerk who issues TIP. No insurance required for Honduras. On drive out show officer TIP and you are free to go. Just a caution: the road into Honduras here is really bad - not recommended for night driving. We were stopped once on this road the next day. They searched the vehicle but did not ask for the fire extinguisher and reflective things (suspect this fad has faded).

Same as other folks. Nicaragua -> Honduras. Pretty easy border crossing for us, though very slow to leave Nicaragua as there was only one aduana for everyone entering and exiting the country. No fixers hassled us at all. Be sure to have some USD in smallish denominations. $3 to exit Nicaragua, $3 to enter Honduras (migration), and $35 for a TIP for Honduras. Didn’t have to make copies of the TIP as other people apparently did—we were given the TIP from the Honduran aduana.

Very easy border crossing from Nicaragua to Honduras. Exit from NIC took some time as they are so slow and the police is so important. But entering Honduras was super easy. We only had to wait almost one hour for our TIP because there was no electricity and the diesel aggregator wasn't working. Otherwise really smooth entering, they didn't check the car.

Started at 9:30am & were done at 12:30. If it wasn’t for the two colonies of ants that decided to call our car their house it would’ve been an hour faster. We had to get fumigated & pay an extra $28 for that. We didn’t go through the scanner, they just quickly looked into our camper. The guy at the immigration also asked for a bribe because we didn’t do the online pre check. He said it had to be done at least 7 days before entering the country. So everything was kinda weird but not as bad as we thought

Passing from Nicaragua straight to El Salvador

EXIT NICARAGUA:
1) go through gate, show passports and all vehicle paperwork. They return passports and paperwork to you and give you traveler’s declaration form. Turn right and go to big blue building and find aduana or police officer to check vehicle (officer asked about drone twice even though we are exiting). Bring your bags through the scanner, aduana/DGA will sign your declaration form, police officer will sign after. Go to Tramite Vehiculo window to cancel TIP, they will keep the original and stamp your declaration form

2) go to immigration office (sign says Impuesto) to get passports stamped, pay $3US for exit tax

3) exit, show passports, declaration form and receipt for paid exit tax

ENTER HONDURAS
4) go to Migracion building, ask which window for entering Honduras because apparently the signs are not accurate. We had to go to the Salida de Honduras sign to enter. Paid 160 Lempiras to enter ($3US).

5) go to Aduana window with copies of your title and passport. In our case since we don’t own the vehicle so we get copies of registration, permission to operate foreign vehicle letter from bank, and passport. Pay $35US for TIP. Didn’t do any vehicle check or fumigation. To get copies, exit the door closest to Aduana window, go across the street, find little white building on left side of green building, paid or 20 lempiras for 4 copies each (for future border crossings), or $1. Get declaration form and fill out, this is to give to the officer when entering Honduras

6) if you want to change money there’s lots of money changer guys right outside the door of the migracion building

7) enter Honduras, show passports, TIP, and give declaration form.

Lots of pushy helpers around but the process isn’t bad so not needed.

WORST BORDER CROSSING OF MY WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE. NEVER COMING BACK TO NICARAGUA BY ROAD. We did everything by the book, we did our precheck online in advance, etc. but it still took us 6 hours to get through. Everyone is super unfriendly except Honduras exit procedure that was very quick and easy. The pain and suffering begins on the NICARAGUA side, they make fun of you in Spanish thinking you won't understand because you're a gringo. The queues are super long and despite there being several booths that could be operating only 2 are in use. roads make no sense. signage is poor. traffic and trucks everywhere. first was the random parking on footpath and long wait to show covid certificate. lots of head scratching as no-one speaks any English. then get passports stamped and pay $13 USD , this took ages because of queues. then the adouanes for the vehicle permit. they need copies of everything so make sure you have that. they took their sweet time as well. then you have to do the scan , had to wait ages because it was raining but they still finally done it ages later while it was still raining, then wait 2 hours for them to study the scan images and 4 times back and forth poking their noses everywhere then finally can pay vehicle import fee and fumigation fee, then get insurance straight after bienvenidos sign in a sketchy looking restaurant, what a nightmare.

We started in El Salvador (6.30am) and arrived at this border on saturday morning around 9.30am.

Honduras: around 20 minutes to check out. Someone from Aduana came to us directly in the parking lot, so no one else bothered us to „help“. Easy and friendly.

Nicaragua: Very friendly staff as well. They took our informations at the Migration office. Took around 1,5 hour (we didn‘t apply in advance). Asked some questions about our travel plans, jobs,… and checked us (online). No problem. TIP was easy and friendly, too. He made copies at the office. No scanner, just a look in the van.
The whole process took 2,5h.
In total we had to pay 40,40$ (2x13+10+4,4). Make sure you have USD.

Scroll down to la_fordtuga's excellent description for the most accurate. This is what we would add:

- We cross on a Friday and they told us everyone was being scanned.
- Our motorhome was scanned and also inspected inside by 2 officers. They opened every single cabinet but they just looked, they didn’t open our stuff
- It took us a total of 3 hours. Immigration was quick and done in under 30min. What it took the longest time was the waiting after our vehicle was scanned (photos attached to see how it looks the scanner area) and also the wait to be scanned since there were lots of tracks and some of them we couldn’t overtake them for lack of space on the “road”
- For the scanner. Only the driver can drive it trough. I (the co-pilot) waited outside with my backpack.
- We were asked if we had a drone or any cameras only once.
- Everyone was very friendly.
- We were able to pay all the paperwork with USD.

Just a heads up. we enteredxwith two vehicles. The aduane were very nice but they made lots of mistakes on the TIPs. The chassis number was wrong on one and one TIP said 30 days for tourism and the Other said Transito, which we think is a shorter period. Check all the details before you leave the window

Smooth 1 1/2 hr crossing from Honduras to Nicaragua starting at 7:45AM. We read every comment for both pins on this border, scroll down to la_fordtuga's excellent description for the most accurate. Here is what we would add:

-We did not do the Nicaragua pre-check. This did not present any issues, immigratiom agent just asked our occupations. Immigration was complete in 20 minutes.
-In terms of customs and vehicle search, we were asked 3 different times by 2 different people of we had a drone, we answered no honestly as we had shipped it ahead. Also asked about cameras, answered honestly that we had one, they did not ask to see it. Never asked about binoculars, something else we were worried about/had read about. Search of the vehicle was pretty cursory, looked in a few drawers, but no removing bags that are packed in in several places in our truck.
-We did not need to go through the scanner, and never needed to make any copies. Customs and issuing TIP took 30 minutes.
-Make sure to get $12 USD insurance from lady at restaurants just after exiting port area. (Left of Bienvenidos sign over road) Cop stopped us at a checkpoint 30 miles down the road and asked for it, first document check of entire trip for us.
-We needed $48 USD in total for crossing with 2 people including insurance.

Smooth border crossing today. Whole process less than 1.5 hrs. Check out of Honduras easy and free. After that, go over bridge, pass trucks, stop at little booth at end of bridge and show covid vaccination and usual documents. Proceed to the blue and white building and all other formalities done there. $13US pp immigration entry, $4.50US fumigation (they take Cordoba for this part) then $15US for some tourism fee. They give a receipt. Inspection of truck straightforward. No scan, asked if we had drone . Then we were in!

Honduras to Nicaragua:
Honestly no big deal, just like any other border. We got here on a Friday 7:15am and we were done by 8:45 am.
Everything as described before, just want to add where to find the car insurance once you are done with all your documents: it’s next to the big “bienvenidos” sign on the left side (it’s a restaurant). 12$ for 30 days!

As encouragement:
-Exiting Honduras took us about 15 minutes without a helper on a Tuesday, around 1pm.
- We have a Ford E250 and we did not have to get through scanner/ x ray or anything at Nicaragua border. They took a brief look inside the van without opening anything / taking a closer look. Asked for drones without checking.
- paperwork for TIP was hassle free, did not even need copies.

DON’T FORGET THE PREQUECKEO!!
We didn’t know it was required and they made us wait a very long time for approval (they will check your names on google, and they better don’t find something you published on YouTube…) but you everyone was super friendly everywhere!

Report Check-In

Our experience was similar to la_fordtuga. The wait to exit Honduras took about 90 minutes because the people who pay fixers here seem to get to pass the tourist line and use the truck driver one that is always really short. The lines for tourists made no real sense TBH. Plus the guard at the door who takes the bribes from the fixers made so many people mad that some were screaming at him. Not that it helped.

Show up here with lots of patience, or be prepared to pay a fixer.

The staff at the windows are kind and helpful. Once we actually got up there, stamping out and cancelling our TIP took maybe 5 minutes.

Report Check-In

Honduras to Nicaragua.
Our experience was a bit different.
1. Pull up to big blue and white building on the left. Park in front there. Get in line. For us, there were only 2 lines: 1 for everybody entering or exiting, and 1 for truck drivers. Took us about 1.5 hours waiting in line to get to the front. We saw some people pay a guy and it took them 2 minutes. Not sure how much they paid. Stamped out with fingerprints. Then go to the windows to the left of the entrance/exit ones and they take your Honduras TIP, super quick no line there.

2. Pass all the trucks on the bridge (we had to ramp the sidewalk). Stop at the blue little building in the middle at the end of the bridge. Show your vaccination card and passport. They’ll give you a customs form to fill out and take with you.

3. Drive straight, through the car wash looking thing with dangling plastic. This is the fumigation.

4. Park in front of the big blue and white building on the left. Enter near the middle into the air conditioned room (yay!). They take all your info, you’ll need a destination address in Nicaragua. Pay $13pp.

5. Go to the next room to the right. Give your customs form to a guy beside the scanners. He’ll sign it, then you need to get 2 copies of that form together with your licence on the same page. You will need also a copy of your licence alone, and your car registration title. To get these, go out and turn left, first tienda on the right does copies. Bring these back to the guy. He will point where to drive to the scanner. Only 1 person is allowed in the car to go through the scanner, the other must wait in the room (again, with AC yay!).

6. The driver takes the vehicle to the front of the line to the scanner, ignore all road rules and curbs. They will call you when it’s your turn. Get scanned (no photos allowed). Drive through and park and get your license and forms back from the officials.

7. Return back to the office. Another person signs at the baggage X-rays.

8. Go to the IPSA window, pay $4.40 for the fumigation.

9. Go to the Tramite Vehicular window. Hand in your original passport, drivers licence, customs paper and original vehicle registration. Sign the new TIP.

10. Drive out. Show the receipt in your passport and your new TIP at the roundabout.

You’re done! Hurray! Our total time was 7:45am-1pm. The AC made it not as bad as we were expecting. Good luck!

Notes:
- The other gringo car with us paid for a helper in Nica and they skipped the X-ray scan for their car. Saved about 30 minutes.
- No one asked about a drone. There’s no check or metal detectors for your body, if you kept it in your pocket should be fine.
- you need insurance in Nicaragua. We didn’t have to show it anywhere, but the police will ask for it. There’s a lady selling it outside where you get copies if you don’t have it yet.

Today we left Honduras and entered Nica. Honduras exit took about 30 min total for my family of 4 and truck. Yes drive past the lonnnnngggg line of semi trucks. In some cases you’ll need to make bold maneuvers.
They stamped our passport goodbye. They keep the TIP, no pausing. We arrived at 9am on a Sunday. Out by 9:30am. Then the Nica process… I’ll post on that border …

Report Check-In

Horrible experience crossing the border from Nicaragua to Honduras. Took us 4,5 hours just to LEAVE Nicaragua. The officials were most unhelpful and unkind. It seemed like they made people from abroad (Guatemala and travelers) go though the scanner, while other people passed easily. You’re a lucky one of you don’t have to go through the scanner!

Going through the scanner probably took us 3 hours, while one of us was waiting outside with all our belongings. They didn’t search through our belongings though.

At the Honduras side, everything went super fast and smooth. First they check your test or vax card, then go through immigration. We had extended our CA4 in Nica and there were no problems. After that we did the TIP, 35$. All done within 30mins.

We arrived at 9 am left the border at 2. So angry and on our way to try another border 🥲

Report Check-In

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE A HELPER! Do not even make eye contact with one or else they will follow you all the way to the other side of the border.

Make sure if you read the instructions for exiting and entering in advance. If you show any interest in using a helper they will take your paperwork to make believe places and then bring the documents back saying you owe them money because they covered fumigation (this does not exist) and other things. Once you give them a little something for their time then they guilt trip you that you haven’t paid enough. The whole thing is a scam and you walk away feeling terrible.

border crossing in Honduras to go to Honduras. I paid 25 us for my vehicle. Please note my Chinese friend had to give his yellow fever card because we were coming from Colombia and Panama. Only to her and I asked why she alone, the customs officer was surprised by my question and immediately said "you too". my chinese friend didn't have it and we had to separate to find ourselves later in mexico.

Same as described but Aduana in Honduras was a very nice smiling man who apologetically charged $25. The whole process, everyone was very friendly and helpful. Helpers not necessarily and a short no gracias was enough. On the Nicaragua side there is a tourist info office. He almost speaks English and was very helpful directing me where to go. He also does photocopies. A surprisingly relaxed border.

Entering Honduras with pets. On the way south at the Las Manos border the SEPA officer told me I could only import maximum of 2 pets per person. Ended up putting the dog in someone else's name just to cross as I travel alone. This crossing it never came up and all three pets were entered in no problem.

Crossing from Nica to Honduras.
This location is not good but it is to distinguish both ways to the border.
Fairly simple yet long. HAVE THE EXACT CHANGE is usd when you quit nicaragua... The lady where you pay you exit tax is sooooo rude ! We passed there on our way in nicaragua and now on our way out. Still as rude. The first time
she threw my passport almost at my face.. So have exact change $ ! Then they inspect your van quickly and sign the declaration form and your TIP to cancel and you go back in to the desk on the right inside the luggage inspection rolling machine. And your done. drive to honduras border to enter..

Honduras is 35$ for the TIP. If you have animals, try to hide them if you cross the country in the same day... or for 2 cats it was 12$ and another lost of time.
