Trail directly off I40 Westbound in NC. Camp site just about a mile in from interstate. You turn off interstate at the end of guard rail, not an exit. Boondock camping. Large low hanging branches, not ok if you are taller than 8 feet.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
The road gets very rough and tight with trees. No high roofs. I took my 2wd van to the first site and would not recommend visiting in anything other than an off-road truck/SUV, your van doesn’t need this abuse. Occupied so I turned around.
Harmon Den NF, The next exit (very close) going North/West after this road has some dispersed camping. They were taken when I went and I can’t figure out how to add the coordinates so add it if you visit that area. .. Go east on Cold spring creek road and you’ll run into at least 2-3. The first one looked only tent friendly.
Report Check-InAccess this spot going West on I-40. We were coming east and had to drive a few miles past the spot and turn around.
Really beautiful and secluded spot with a creek surrounding 3 sides of you. We have pretty good clearance and didn’t quite make it to the first site (the other sites were blocked by a swollen creek that no truck could cross this time of year), but we found a little flat pull off on the left side of the road in front of some vacant summer cabins. Our pup enjoyed running around in the field in front of the cabins. You really do need serious clearance for this road.
There’s about 4 established sites with rings along the trail. Anything past this point high clearance 4x4 recommended as the trail changes with the rain fall. Few low water crossings and some rutted out areas. Most camping sites big enough for 2-3 rigs. Site closest to the bus could fit a whole party, up to 5 rigs.
Report Check-InPrimitive camp site. Pack what you need in, pack out what you brought. Close to the creek, with fire ring and a small 'table' attached to a tree. If you plan to take Hurricane Creek trail, high clearance vehicle, good tires and off road skills required. Trail charges from season to season. Last part of trail was extremely washed out and extremely challenging. Typically One Way past camp site - Good Fun Track!
Report Check-InClearance became an issue about .2 miles from the GPS pin. Probably under 8 feet tall is ok, but anything taller will have issues with the large low hanging branches. Did not make it to the site.
