Description

For truly Indiana Jones style ruins visit La Congona, about a dozen fairly well preserved but overgrown ruins, well off the beaten path. Saw a couple of condors as well.
Use maps.me for the route so you don’t miss the 2 right turns off the main trail, first through a gate (was open for me), shortly after again to not enter a farm (the dog might remind you). Final location: -6.679469 -77.827743

Big Rigs & 2WD: Park in Leymebamba, hike 8km each way.
Mid size 4x4 and most sane small 4x4 drivers want to park in San Cristobal and hike 4.5km each way.
The marked turn-around spot is where I believe even the insane should stop not to annoy local farmers, hike 2.7km each way.
(A good off-roader could go another km but would tear up some overgrown farm land, an enduro further)
Or take a moto-Taxi as far as he’s willing to go.
Free and no services. Nobody else was on the trail.

ALWAYS: Preserve the ruins, save nature, respect the people. Thanks.

Most everything should be able to comfortable drive an park at San Cristobal (definitely not worth walking up to here). Making it to this point doesn’t require being insane nor a 4x4 vehicle but you will appreciate having a capable rig of a smaller size and a competent driver. I stopped in San Cristobal and was happy to walk the distance.

From here Maps.me and AllTrails both have the route. Climb up to where it Ts at top and take a left and stay high.

Overall, if you’ve visited one of these “lost” sites then you probably don’t need to do this one. If you haven’t and you’ve got the energy it’s fun to check out and a different than an uncovered site.
