Description

"Yosemite of the South"... Valle de Cochamó is an incredibly beautiful natural wonder that takes a 7-mile hike to get to. There is only one option to park and/or overnight before hiking into the valley, which is run by a gentleman named Claudio. Posted price is 3000 CLP/day.

The hike to La Junta is about 13km one way. (4-6h) On foot a lot to go and back in one day, by horse feasible. They rent horses with a guide, two people pay 75.000 cp in total.
If you have a tent we cannot recommend this hike enough... It is like Yosemite before it was a National Park... You can camp at La Junta on the other end of the hike for 4000cp-8000cp. CAMPING RESERVATION before hiking (website) or ask reception (wild camping isn’t allowed ). There are various other campsites apart from La Junta (Trawen, Vista Hermosa, and others) that do not require a reservation/voucher beforehand. If unsure, ask at the registration before you begin the hike.

Please note pets are NOT allowed into the valley.

We recommend !

Latest Check-Ins

We parked at Claudio’s house (the large parking area at which to leave your car while hiking into La Junta) and paid 3000 CLP/day. We spent the night here before hiking into La Junta early the next morning, it was quiet and a good place to spend the night. There are really no other options to overnight or even park if you’re looking to head into La Junta.

Updates for 2021-2022 season (I also added a photo of the sign board):

Two options for parking at TH: Basecamp (4000 pesos per day) or at the neighbor's property (3000 pesos per day). Or hitchhike from town.

Camping: there is no (official) free camping in Cochamo Valley. If you are carrying a big backpack, you must show proof of campsite reservation at the guard/registration station (once in the valley, you can add nights no problem). There are several campgrounds in La Junta- make reservations online at www.reservasvallecochamo.cl

If you show up without reservations (like we did), the only option is to pay for Trewen- you can reserve a campsite at their Basecamp/Parking area just before the guard station.

Prices that I saw:
La Junta- 8000 pesos pppd
Trewen- 10000 pesos pppd

You must register and provide RUT or Passport info at registion/guard station at start of hike. There are also restrictions on how late you can begin your hike, based on whether you are backpacking (one way) or day hiking (round trip).

Beyond La Junta, the trail to Argentina is closed due to the land border closures.

can stay here or better yet park here and stay at the upper campsites! 4-5 hour hike to get the La Junta, the best known. others like La Manzana looked really nice too. the parking costs 2000 per day!

prices: 1500 half day, 2000 full day / 24h

parked here 3 full days during our Cochamo stay, didn't camp here though.

Parked here for 3 days while we hike to Camping La Junta. 2,000 pesos per day to park. We reserved via email ([email protected]) with Camping La Junta a few days prior our hike. We were asked at check point for our reservation. However, there are many other campground that apparently don’t require reservations according to other hikers we talked to. 12-13 km hike very muddy and messy especially when it rains. The hike is relatively flat though. You’ll arrive at a very beautiful place. Surrounded by massive granite mountains. Lots of hikes and treks from La Junta. Plan to stay at least 2 nights up there.

What an absolutely gorgeous valley! Parking as described, the hike into The Valley is muddy, if you have rubber boots, it makes the 5h walk (one way) easier. Either way, don't even bother trying to stay clean :)
We didn't have a campground reservation and got a voucher at the registration point. They did say however that when all campgrounds are full, they only allow day hikers to go in. Wild camping is quite difficult (besides that it's forbidden), the entire terrain is narrow and muddy with only few open fields.
It's definitely worth staying a couple of days up there, there are multiple beautiful hikes you can do. The campgrounds sell cake, bread, potatoes, lettuce and some sort of spinach if you run out of food. If you don't want to carry everything on your shoulders, you horses for 30.000 CLP.
One last word for the Arco Iris hike: it's really gorgeous, from La Junta to the Mirador it's 3h for 2,5km, so you can imagine that quite some scrambling is involved. It has quite some sketchy parts and ropes help you to tackle them. From the mirador it's another 2h to the peak, but even now snow equipment was necessary, so we turned around after the mirador.

To park your car here is now 2.000 (neighbours have the same price), to camp 3.000 (2 persons and vehicle).
There are 4 campgrounds in the valley. We didn't make a reservation, no problem even in weekend/high season, but we had to stay on campground Los Manzanos, 2 km before La Junta. Very interesting (and unforgettable) way to cross the river to get to this campground!! Cold shower, potable water and they sell sopapillas and sometimes bread.

Valley is really like Yosemite but trek is beaten up by mules who carry tourists or their supplies like Grand Canyon. After rain you will be chasing parts between deep mud to stay more or less dry. If they continue like that, there won't be any OK trail for hikers in a couple of years. Should be better when dry. Hike itself all in forest so nothing special. Camp 5000 CLP. Have to reserve now via their website 2 weeks in advance or try your luck at the checkpoint. Some food left in the shelters so was OK even I did not bring enough. Some people sold came and bread in peak season. Arcoiris Trek under maintenance, ropes not secured.

Easy place to camp if arriving late for trekking into La Junta. 1500 p/day to camp and leave the car behind. Pit toilet but running water to do dishes and fill up bottles. There are 3 campsites in La Junta we stayed at Trawen 5000 pp, big site so easy to find a spot with privacy. The woman there also provides tarps if u ask. Trawen had good pit toilets, running water and an undercover area to cook / eat food, outdoor cold showers. Close to lots of trails. Stayed 3 nights. Make sure to do Arco Iris trek all the way to the final peak - stunning views and well worth it.

The hike to the beautiful Cochamo Valle is about 4hours. there are two options for acccomodation when you get there: camping or Refugio. Camping is 3000pp in dec or 4000pp in jan-feb, the camping is beautiful and there is a common area to cook in (must bring own cooker, utensils and gas) and fire to dry off from the rain. The Refugio is 16000pp BUT note that the Refugio is closed for the 2015/16 season. There is nowhere to buy groceries in the valley, bring everything and take out trash. More info at www.cochamo.com

We spent two nights here. Very basic, but only 1500 pesos per night. There's a nice little trail down to the river.

"Yosemite of the South"... Valle de Cochamó is an incredibly beautiful natural wonder which takes a 7 mile hike to get to. This is the secure parking for the hike, you can just park at the trail head if you want, it costs 1500cp per day. We asked if we could stay the night in our truck and they said it would not be a problem, no price difference and they let us park in their camping area which was nicer than the parking lot. This can be a day hike but 14 miles. If you have a tent we cannot recommend this hike enough... It is like Yosemite before it was a National Park... You can camp at La Junta on the other end of the hike for 2000cp-4000cp.
