Latest Check-Ins

Tickets for the mummies and mirador are purchased from the visitors centre in Coqueza Canton for 30Bob. Also, for the Volcano Tunupa guide 50Bob.
The mummies cave was manned by a lovely lady who gave a little history of the area and the reason they are located there.
Drive up is doable in a Sprinter.

Little addition to the previous comments.
The road is still not the best but we managed without any problem with our RWD. High clearance and a strong engine helped though. It’s not too steep, some lose rocks but we never lost traction. Just went up slowly in first gear, it took around 20 mins. From the parking lot the hike is really beautiful. The guide told us we could have slept there if we wanted - the place is wide, levelled and with a breathtaking view. We didn’t stay for the night cause we wanted to take a warm shower down.

Check the pictures for more info. I think there are also more ways to go to the top. Also by car but you need 4x4

First the road to the parkinglot was hell. Not possible with our vwt5. We got stock and slipt all the way. Decided to walk. When you want to do the hike pay good attention because its not easy to find. Go first to the mummies (very interesting) then go to the left around the cave. There the tracking will start. Follow the white stones. And follow the sign vulcano. Some weird arrows but pay attention you follow the right one.

The hike itself was very challenging. The altitude will hit you straight in the lungs haha. It goes up up up. And the rocks are loose. 1,5h up 1h down. The view is great. Go early so you can have a big rest and try to go some more.

Btw for the mummies ask for a key! They jeed to give you a key. We got it from a tourguide. We gave it back afterwards.

This trek is incredible but puts your mental difficulty. The first Mirador is 4300 m and the other at 4900m. Very windy but you can find some places sheltered. We saw an old camp with rock to make a fire in the middle of the road to go to the top. I am a smoker and I did it. I am very proud because the view is amazing, so if I did it, everyone can do! For the mummies, it was closed, the lady where you buy the ticket has "tourist info" (just before turning right to go to the parking lot) you have forgotten to give them .. so do not forget to ask for the key! We saw a little bite and it was very impressive, I saw the skeleton of a man and those of children .. To go back, we took 5h30 and 10 km, take your time and enjoy the view it is really worth it!

Yes I can also confirm that they will tell you in the village that you cannot ho higher than that point (4400m) but nobody is here so nobody will care. If you go after 10 you will not meet many turists. Take some sun protection and lots of water. We felt the altitude a lot and the way from parking to the first mirador took ud 1.5h. Also in the small cave where are the mumies there is a lady and she will check your ticket. She speaks just Spanish and explains how the mumies get there and etc and you can also take pictures. If you have a time I will definitely recommend you to do this trip!

I confirm the frustrating information below. It is still 500bl to go up the volcano with a guide. We heard of a 800bol fine if caught. We still walked higher than 4400m on an easy marked Path. Lots of other volcanoes to climb freely, but this one is well located and beautiful! There was nobody to see us and we did it quickly so not to awake suspicion once down.
You can park the car in the center next to the info center it is safe.

We started walking from the village, it was our first trek at this height, we did it in ~2h including some stops for photos and the visit of the mummies cave. It was ok but a bit hard at the end. We got down in 1h. The views at the top are really nice, but the road to the parking lot is quite bad (lot of holes, sand, rocks...), but there are some places to turn back if you realize you can’t do it with your vehicle (of course if you have 4x4 it’s ok!)
With the ticket you buy in the touristic info, you also have access to a small ethnographic museum where a lady can answer your questions. The whole thing is a nice stop during a day, and then there are many places to park for the night in this very small and quiet village, with views over the Salar

With the entrance of 30 bols you only can access to the altitude of 4400 msnm, but if you want to go further you must to hire a guide and paid 500 bols per person (are they nuts?). We have the equipment and the experience to go on our own but they told us if we go further without pay a guide, they will charge us with a penalty fee of 1000 bols each. We went away without know the volcano and very sad for not had the money for to hire a guide.

We think it's not fair because the access to the mountain must be for everyone.
