Description

- After much consideration we decided to tackle the Lagoon Route with the van. We set off from Uyuni, the 701 is mostly good packed dirt. We took a left turn around point S21.39596 W67.99307 and drove up the hill for about 3 kms. The road is rough and rocky. Afterwards there are multiple tracks, usually one worse than the other, with deep ruts that made us drive on top of them. Next came a bit of soft sand accompanied by a serious washboard, which pretty much continues to the Chilean border. We would not drive it again, even in a 4X4. You can see pretty much the same stuff in northern Chile, with better roads, less people and for free.
- nevertheless, the views are beautiful here
- bitterly cold at night, -5° C in the morning (May)

Latest Check-Ins

There is now a sign saying access is prohibited (maybe through other ways its not). Anyway we decided to go further, past the military checkpoint and the hotel and when heading to the ridge wildcampsite we found tracks that go down to the lake. You'll be close but out of sight of the hotel. Coordinates: 21.57831, 68.04503. Lake and Flamingos right next to that spot. So many points around here so I didn't create a new one.

Quiet and pretty. 2 sets of military guys came to check on us

Report Check-In

Beautiful Bushcamp right at the shore of the laguna with 100s of flamingos. We were lucky and had a evening/night without much wind and a perfect sunset.
The track fron the main road (25km away) is rather bad, lots of stones and rocky sections and a bit sandy in some short parts. I‘d say 4x4 is not 100% required in dry season but for sure high clearance needed.

Beautiful spot, we had lunch here, road is bad but with 4x4 okey, just follow the tracks, there are different tracks but at the end they all lead to the same hotspots, it is very cold, take gloves, warm cap and warm jacket with you, even if Chile has similar landscape it was a very beautiful and exciting trip and it's worth to do it (once) :-)
