Description

Update note Feb 2020 about this check-in description: this mainly applies to the Rwandan one stop border hall, not the Tanzanian one where this check-in co-ordinates apply. From TZ to RW, go straight to the RW one stop border post and NOT this one.

----

Dutch citizens without Carnet de Passage

We arranged our East African Visa via the Rwandese governments website, where there is an option to 'pay later' at the chosen borderpost.

After three days we received two PDF files which we had to show at the border. We weren't able to print the files but luckily we were helped without a problem.

Both countries' immigration, customs and bank is in one big hall:
We had to show the PDF files on our phone to get an exit stamp from Tanzania and had to visit customs and the bank first.
At customs we immediately asked for a TIP as well and received a slip for both the VISAS and the TIP to pay at the bank.

90 days, multiple entries, East African Visa USD100,- pp
TIP for 15 days is RWF 15 000,-(around USD19,- according to the banks exchange rate), TIP is extendable in bigger cities.

After the bank we had to go to immigration to receive our VISAS and to customs to receive our TIP.

Everything was very easy and efficient and done in less than an hour.

You can get a east-african vise on arrival for USD100. They only accept dollars for the visa, and take 1000 franc for administration per visa, so exchange before getting in line. The roads are almost all asfalt on the Tanzanian side now.

TZ to RW: Applied for East Africa Visa on arrival and process was very smooth. Ensure you carry cash USD (100 USD pp). Also needed to pay 2000 Rwandan francs for service.

Report Check-In

Smooth crossing. As described. ATM for francs is working at the moment. No PCR test or vacation certificate required.

Tanzania to Rwanda: do not stop here. Drive across the river to the Rwandan one stop border post (the check-in to the north-west of this one) and get stamped out of Tanzania for passport and vehicle there; as well as stamped into Rwanda for passport and vehicle.

RWANDA TO TANZANIA just add:
- road to the border is in good condition
- ATM will charge you 11 800 tz shillings
- border crossing is open 24/7 BUT bank is open on Saturday only till 12 and Sunday close so to pay road tax (25$) you have to ask for help money changers who will firstly exchange to tzn shillings and then pay their mobile money (+2$)
- visa to Tanzania is 50$ valid 90 days, multiple entry
- take care of your CDP so they will give you stamp for 3 months not one (as visa)
- very friendly customs officer allowed us to stay for a night at the border

Going from Rwanda to Tanzania. Easy process. Go through immigration first, customs after. Visas can be purchased at crossing with USD. If you have no Carnet, TIP can be purchased in USD or TZS, but is far better in Shillings. Vehicles with East African registration pay nothing for TIP. COMESA yellow card was not checked. ATM gives out Rwandan Francs or Tanzanian Shillings. Money changers give decent rates.

Report Check-In

Big border. Lots of trucks. Everything is in one large building and is quite well organized and efficient. There is a bank and ATM (as well as a Forex) on the Rwanda side and a bank and ATM inside the Immigration building on the TZ side as well. We crossed on New Year’s Day, so it was very quiet. Traveling on a US passport, 7-day transit visa was $30USD and 7-day TIP was free.

Report Check-In

Going from Tanzania to Rwanda we think you don't stop here you go to the next onestop-border on the rwandan side. Anyway we stopped here and stamped out the carnet.
