Description

Ferry from Tobolobampo to La Paz: as Mazatlan ferries were full we drove on and took the Baja ferry from here. They classed our VW T3 Transporter as a small "automovil", so we paid 3700 mxn including two persons, without a cabin, you just stay in a huge salon with big seats which us pretty enough for the 7 hours-ride. TMC also runs from here and should be about 3400 mxn for a car/van. Note that the schedule on the website seems to change sometimes, so maybe call ahead for reservations.

Attention TMC . Children and women are no longer accepted on board. We are a family with 3 children and we cannot travel with them, we have to travel with Baja Ferrys, much more expensive

Report Check-In

Motorcycles NO LONGER allowed with TMC, you have to cross from Topo-La Paz with Baja Ferries now.

Price today for crossing 27 July 2023 was 4525MX with Baja Ferries for a motorbike and rider.

You can still use TMC from Mazatlan to La Paz apparently and TMC is still accepting all other vehicles excluding motorbikes.

Checking in because the last one was a couple of years ago. Baja ferries and TMC still leave from here. This location is for Baja ferries. Ticket sales are inside, you'll need a printout from the weighing station. The ticket attendants speak English reasonably well, all others only speak Spanish but everyone was very nice to us.

Make sure you bring some cash to pay for the weighing station (65 pesos), the 'use' of the port in la Paz (210 pesos), and a cleaning fee (30 pesos).

You can also reserve and pay online, an 'automobil' is anything 6 meters or shorter. Anything over that is probably classified as a RV (we have a short van so no experience with this).

We paid 9625 pesos of which about 2000 was for a 2 person cabin.

We were traveling with TMC and had 3 kids, aged 6,12 and 15. When buying our tickets, we had a small discussion with the lady at the counter, because kids were not allowed. Because we had a WhatsApp text with confirmation of our booking and that we were travelling with the 3 kids, they allowed us to board the ferry. We felt lucky that they agreed to let us go with the ferry... we paid 15.000 pesos for a motorhome that is 9.8 meters and 5 persons.

We took the TMC ferry to la Paz from here. With TMC the dog can stay with you in the van and you can sleep inside your van.
TMC runs ferries from here from Sunday till Friday (so only not on Saturday).
We were at 1pm at the harbor to get weighted and measured to get our tickets. Harbor is a little confusing without any signs but just ask and they show you the way. When you are measured you can go inside and can choose between the TMC window or the Baja Ferries window. It’s in the same building.
We payed 3654 pesos for a 6m sprinter and 2 people. Were classified as a commercial vehicle 6m. The dog is free.
In the afternoon we did some shopping in Los Mochis and we returned around 7pm, we could drive aboard around 8pm. Ask for a place at the upper deck, less noisy and more fresh air. It was not busy at all when we took the ferry at a Friday. We arrived at la Paz around 8am.

We payed MXN 3.700 (2.600 LR Defender+driver) + 1.100 (1 pasenger), horewer they want charged us MXN 4.500 (3.400 considered the LR Defender as "Van Suburban/PickUp + 1.100 (1 pasenger). They sayed you have stickers on the car, so se considered as a comercial car. After a long discution they considered as Automóvil Familiar even 6 meters (see photo with prices).

When we stayed there the barco delayed the departure to La Paz and can sleep on the parking.
There is a cold shower for free mientras wait.
In the port of La Paz they charged us MXN 176 (port fee) + MXN 30 (fumigación)

BajaFerries leave for La Paz Mo-Fr 23.59, and Su 23.00, Sa no service.
Enter the port through the 'embarkation gate', even if you have no ticket yet. Get weighed and measured (yes, motos too) and pay for the service (was 54 pesos for a bike).
Then you can proceed to the counter to purchase your ticket. You may leave the port again after that. Wait for embarkation and be aware that the trucks get all the privileges (they started loading at 21.30 and the cars and bikes waited for 1.5 hours).
You arrive at the port in La Paz at around 6 the next morning, but again trucks get to disembark first. Once you're out of the boat, wait in line to pay port fees (88 per bike) and go through a police check and a military check (who will check vehicle and luggage).

This is where you catch the TMC ferry to La Paz - check the TMC website for sailings - they have a calendar for each month. We bought our tickets earlier during the day (then relaxed at the malecon - returned at 5pm, made supper and watched them load the transport trucks) they will weigh you first then you go into the ticket office to the TMC window. They measure length. We paid $mx4,379 for our Ford F-150 with camper (classified as a "pick up/van commercial"). Length 6.8m and two passengers. Great because you can sleep in your camper. Fun experience. Left at 10pm and arrived 7am in La Paz. You wade through a military checkpoint and then you are in the Baja!
