Description

No man’s land at the border is quiet, at times. Restaurant and store to get stuff, and a bathroom ( behind Aduana). There is also the river to check out. Nothing on the street after dark except kids and dogs, can’t be all bad. Music from somewhere after 8.

Ecuador to Perú with a dog.

Very easy border Crossing, quick exit on the Ecuadorian side and the same for the entry into Perú. After saying that we wanted 90 days of Visa he asked us if we would rather like 100 days, which we of course accepted.

Very thorough check of our export papers from Agrocalidad. We could not have hidden our dog, as the customs checked our car from the inside. So we would recommend to get the export papers at Animal Doc in Cuenca.

Good place to camp. Lit. Safe. People here were very nice. Reasonably quiet. 3 bars of 3g.

Show up after 5pm and you’ll be sleeping here. Nice people chill spot. Update on the road: not nearly as bad as described in OG post. Google says it’s 60km of dirt road now and in middle of April and a week of sunshine after supposedly the rainiest season in a decade it was very standard conditions. A few problems but overall what you should expect of a dirt road in the Andes and not less.

If you’re concerned like I was then I think the key to this road having dry days in the rearview mirror. But I still think it’s probably makable in the rain these days. Just more of an adventure.

They don’t sell insurance here but you can buy it online. https://www.interseguro.pe/soat

Peruvian immigration and aduana easy!
Ecuadorian side immigration no problem, but the guy at the Ecuadorian aduana has no idea how to handle, i.e. do the paperwork, for a foreign car...
Computers are not connected to the internet so everything is done via the phone?
I think I confused the poor guy....we are travelling in a Chilean car, with my British passport and my Australian drivers licence....

The people who live here are really friendly. There are restaurants and a small grocery store, all who exchange money. There is also full Claro/3G reception.

no problem crossing the border here now, people from both sides know what they are doing. FYI, to get into Peru you'll be asked for your international vaccination certificate as yellow fever shot is required. so don't forget it and keep it at hand, unlike me that had stored it at the bottom of the bag strapped to the bike 🙃 if you don't have your yellow fever shot, they'll given you one here, watched the lady vaccinate someone and it was done properly (hygiene and all), but not sure you'll have to pay.

Process would be quite simple if the computers could connect to the network, and if the gentlemen manning the Aduana office were more familiar with the workings of an Aduana office. As it is, they need to call someone else frequently to ask how to fill in the importation form. But the guy on the other end is unsure, and is busy killing cows on his farm, which is distracting for all involved.

Wow.

- We arrived here at night after about 100 kms of dirt road from Vilcabamba. In March 2014 the state of the road was pretty bad. It starts as a beautiful paved road, but soon deterioriates into a mud bath. We managed until Zumba with only a couple of bottom scratches, but after Zumba there was an enormous mudslide that took away the road and a bridge. The new road was just being built and was too soft for any vehicle. We had to be towed up by a caterpillar despite having 4x4. They are constantly improving the road, but if it rained recently, expect the worst.
