Description

- multiple options here
- we stayed at a "Finca" by the infobooth for $2 per person a night - parked in the garden in front of it. The house was empty (except for some bat crap- couple of them live here)
- cold shower, flushing toilet
- talk to Henry at the place that sells tours at the fork where the dirt road leaves the paved PanAm.
- they also offered us to stay behind the restaurant (dirty parking lot) - obviously to sell us some food and drinks
- we went for the Finca, which offered more privacy, but was not really spectacular
- There are more camping options if you follow the road down to the river (behind the information booth, you need to pay the entrance to the park first - 2$ pp). There seemed to be a nice camping right at the end of the road before the river.
- get ready for some very pushy locals trying to sell you the canyoning tour. Prices start at $20 pp, we got it down to 12$ pp, but didn't go at the end because we didn't feel like getting wet (it wasn't really warm and we've already been to ATM in Belize, but it should be nice)
- If you just want to see the canyon, you don't need a guide - pay 2$ pp at the entrance booth and either leave your car there or drive down to the river (parking ca 20 Cordobas) and walk up stream, crossing the river twice (jumping across on rocks, you don't have to get wet). But with a guide it gives you far more! The route walking and swimming from a to b was wonderful. he showed is where you can jump from the rocks. with a swimming vest it feels very safe. At one point the path ends and you can take a small boat for 25 Cordobas pp. 500 meters further into the canyon. There should be also another path that would lead you up to the canyon rim and a mirador (it is marked on OpenStreet Maps).

Stayed at La Quinta de San Rafael, just in the park, about 500 meters after the info booth, before the river on the left. Clean enough toilet (flushing) and shower, 110 volt connection. It is a place difficult to get into with a big rig.

We didn't feel like paying the extra for camping so we drove across the river and camped on the other side. The ford is in fairly good condition, we managed in our 2WD 4Runner. There's a drop-off at the end of the ramp into the river, it's possible to pile up river rocks to make this easier to cross.
