We entered park on 14 Oct 2023to go to Savuti. Advice at gate was to go Marsh Rd. We saw 2 sightings of Lion within 8km of gate and other game.
About 30km up Marsh Rd bit of a stretch of about 5km of mud. Passable but needed momentum. Had feeling with a bit more traffic might become more tricky.
Savuti was very dry (other than the mud on the marsh Rod) had little game except for Marabou pan and Pump Pan…..
We returned by Sand Ridge road - a comfortable drive. Few stretches of thicker sand but totally ok in Hugh range and tyre pressure down. Exited park on 16/10.
Report Check-InMababe to Savuti. We took the marsh road, wich was fully dry in June. Easy, no 4x4 needed, just slow going in some messed up parts. Took us 3h30. Quite boring drive.
Arriving in Savuti, deep sand starts and 4x4 become necessary. Tires at 1.2 bar is perfect for Savuti - Ghoha. Expect a lot of nasty corrugation and bumps but you will not get stuck with any decent 4x4. The Savuti Channel was fully dry in June so not many animals wondering around Savuti. Too bad.
Very frindly staff at mababe gate - they will help you to find the best road to pass. as mentioned before: don‘t the the sand ridge road.
from maun it‘s a 3h drive to the gate (also 4x4 recuired). at least we left maun at 5am and arrived at thobolo‘s bush lodge (after driving trough savuti and the ghoha gate) at 4pm. very nice journey but needs concentration at the sand roads. but at the end safe to drive. we drive a toyota hillux with rooftop tent.
Staff at this entry gate were helpful and advised on the best route to take to Ghoha Gate.
Park fees (1 day; transit) are BWP 270 for foreigners; BWP 205 for South Africans & BWP 115 for a foreign registered vehicle. Kids up to 5 go free and up yo 12 years half price of the state rates. The permit is issued here, but fees are payable in cash at the Savuti Gate in the North. You need both the receipt and the permit to exit when you leave at the exit gate. The road conditions are for 4x4 with some areas of deep sand. Allow 5 hours to cross the park, including a few game viewing stops.
Report Check-InFees are 120 pula pppd for people, 50 pula for a car but 1000 for a truck 3.5-7 tonnes and 1500 pula for 7t+!!! per day!
Staff at all gates are rather unfriendly and trying to sell maps for 250 pula. Said it would take 3 hours to reach the next gate in our truck and that it wasn't sandy, it took 6 and was incredibly sandy.
This is a park gate so if you want to visit Chobe you can't avoid it but keep expectations low.
Opens around sunrise, closes around sunset.
Report Check-InGate was supposed to be open at 6am. Staff didn’t turn up until after 7am. Absolutely didn’t care! So be prepared to have some delays. No maps. Not helpful at all. If you want an overnight pass they will ask for a reservation number. If you don’t have one use: reservation number 3213 site 3 for Savuti camping :)
Report Check-InDay Pass for two People and Car (EU Number Plate) is 290 P. No Transit Pass available.
We bushcamped around 10 km away from the Gate (near the Khwai River).
