Description

Customs will collect a $25 car/$10 motorcycle road tax. They take US dollars, Tajik somoni, and Kyrgyzstan som. Keep the receipt or you will pay again on the way out of the country.

Hygiene, disinfection and other costs are nonsense. If you don't get the papers for this, don't worry: you don't need it.

Only the 25 dollar for car tax.

Latest Check-Ins

We crossed from Tajikistan into Kyrgyzstan end of April. No problem at both borders, everything went smooth and fast. Nobody wanted some money. The pass between the 2 borders was still covered in snow and mud, so it was challenging riding our motorcycles. It took us several hours for 20km because it was so sloppery and we dropped the bikes a couple of times. Should be better in summer :-)

Report Check-In

Tajik customs tried to extort 5 dollars per persons as we didn't have a migration card. We've never got that card from anyone so I believe it's a document they made up.
Besides this they were friendly, they even invited us for tea and snacks.

Report Check-In

Leaving Tajikistan; 1) customs tried to extort a small $10 bribe as the paperwork that we are given when we entered the country had an incorrect spelling on a name. We just played dumb (and in fairness it was the mistake of the Tajik border guards when we came in) and we’re on our way. 2) I was asked to show my visa on exit, so make sure you have a paper or digital copy. A Greek motorbiker did not have this (or signal) and was stuck. RIP the Greek motorcycler.

Tadjikistan --> Kirghiztan

since 1 week, the border is open again for tourist.
we pass the border the 1st of August with 2 other trucks. (3 trucks, 6people).

no problem on the tadjik side, friendly. take 40 min for all of us.

bit long and slow on the kirghiz side, because they just learn how to do the process. and they had some internet connection problem.
but really friendly and happy to see the border open for tourists.
they offer us some vodka 😂
took is 4h in kirghiz side,

so around 5h the total border experience.

good to know : you 'eed to send an email to the khirgiz tourism department before you arrival at the border. (2days at least I think)
with :
- day of passage
- which way ( from TJ or from KG)
- copy of passport
- copy of car documents
- picture of your car

email : [email protected]

Report Check-In

We did it! Crossed successfully from Kyrgyzstan to Tajikistan. We’re told we are the first car doing this side since COVID
On Kyrgyz side:
You need a “letter” from the tourist department. You basically just send an email to [email protected] with a copy of your passport, the approx. date you wanna cross and if your going from KG to TJ or the other way. They will then send it to the border directly. Send it a few days in advance or you have to camp at the border until it arrives.
After quick passport check and car check we were send off into Norman’s Land. Half way through there was another military checkpoint with passport control. Nothing to pay.
On Tajik side:
We were greeted with wide eyes and open mouths. After handshake with the guards they checked our passports, dog passport and car documents. Car check was rather quick. At customs the officer asked if we know how much the road tax is. We said 25$ (280 somoni) and he agreed( we have a 12t truck). After paying at the customs building on the right we were welcomed to Tajikistan.

Report Check-In

Entering Tajikistan:

1) Passport stamp at first building on left. Presented printed evisa but otherwise free. 5 min

2) Drug control office, first small building on left after passing through giant empty building. 5 min

3) Customs office, last building on left just before gate. Very friendly guys who gave me tea and eucalyptus/menthol candy when they saw I was out of breath (walking around in deep mud in riding suit and motocross boots at 4200m). $10 moto tax with receipt. Interestingly, I got 16 days' vehicle permit instead of 15 days. 10 min

4) No mention of quarantine/disinfection and didn't even go to that building.

Total time: 20 min
Total cost: $10 (moto) + evisa

Report Check-In

Tajikistan to Kyrgystan:

Exit Tajikistan: Hand over customspapers and get exit passportstamp. Took 10 min.
We were not asked to pay anything.

Entering Kyrgystan: Passport stamp takes 10min. Custompaper for the car 20min. Did not have to pay anything.

Smooth sailing.

Report Check-In

Quite smooth. Took 45 mins.
Truck up to 10t: roadtax 100$.
Confirmed by several people. Seems to be clean paperwork.

Report Check-In

Leaving Tajikistan: Don' t pay anything for the car desinfection! They want 80 Somoni for a document. If you say no, it's also okay. Customs and Immigration is quick and friendly.

Report Check-In

From Kyrgyzstan to Tajikistan:
passport control on the left side - 5min
then drive further to the next gate.
In the hut on the left side is the customs declaration for the car. 2400 TadSom - 10min and don't forget to take off your shoes.
After it we were send to veterinary & desinfection on the right side. He wanted 23 Som for the paper. We denied and he said, that we should go back to Kyrgyzstan. So we went out of the office and got back the car.
After 2min he said, that we can leave and opened the gate.

Report Check-In

Didn’t even ask for quarantine, we were let go in 10 min and 235 som (25 $).

Report Check-In

Crossing in terms of customs and passport control was easy. Like everyone mentions before me, don't pay the quarantine fee.. it's bs.
However, be aware of the terrible road at the Tajik border. We arrived around 4pm when the road (if you can call it that) turned into a huge mudpool. Our poor Volkswagen T4 got stuck twice within 50 meters and we had to wait for the next people crossing the border to pull us out (see pic). The road just before the Tajik customs until a halfway through to the Kyrzyg customs is quite tricky. When we were there it was very muddy and we drove through a snowstorm. We made it with a 2wd old Volkswagen so there is hope! Just be careful and if you have a 2wd maybe try to cross in the morning when the ground is still frozen. The worst stretch is at the Tajik checkpoint, the rest i more manageable.
Good luck.

Report Check-In

Leaving Tajikistan, similar story. We followed advice to go to the hut on the right hand side. Customs was jolly and nice and warm. He came outside to check the car, then after he pointed up to the blue hut and said "now you need to get quarantine". I said firmly "no we don't, our documents are in order" and that was that. Passport control is a bit further up after you've gone through the first gate.

Report Check-In

Coming from Kyrgyzstan. The guy in the customs building (on the left before the gate) was friendly except extremely sensitive on taking the shoes off. $25 requested and given. No car check. This customs official then told me to walk across the gate to the building on the right (with the blue roof). Those guys wanted me to pay for some quarantine/veterinary fees. After reading this forum I said I don't want that and I'm not gonna pay. They shouted on me aggressively to take back the $25 and get out of Tajikistan back to Kyrgyzstan. So I asked how much they actually want. It was only 3$ (25 somoni) so paid and all was fine.

Report Check-In

Everything went very smooth entering Tajikistan. I was offered chai while they did the paperwork. Tax is 25 US dollar for entering with car

After customs and border control, they called me into the house on the right. First the guy asked for some money for some papers, but when I refused he just wrote down the details of my car and let me go.

I gave the police a lift to Karakul. On the way, he showed me good places to stop for a picture :)

Report Check-In

Kyrgyzstan to Tajikistan
Tajikistan side/border
At this border we were stopped at the gate for 2 minutes, the gate was opened and we were let in. We parked opposite the building on the left. Entered the door on the left where a (drunk) officer took our passports, car passport and visa, wrote in his book, stamped our visa and passport and said welcome.
Got back in the car, drove slowly to the right around the buildings to the exit gate where we were called back to customs on the left. Another officer took the same info, charged us $25 for temp import tax, gave us a receipt and import form and again welcomed us. We got back in the car, but were stopped just after the gate by EVERYONE including the officer. Forced to go in the building (on the right), an unofficial filled out an official looking 'certificates' even stamped them and said it was veterinary and disinfection -$15. We said we don't need it, he refused to give us our passports back, told us to go back to Kyrgyzstan, shouted at us but we persisted and he gave in. He watched us drive away and did nothing else. No one checked the inside of our vehicle and
only took 30 minutes.

Report Check-In

Leaving Tajikistan was no hassle at all. Avoid the little hut with the blue roof up on the hill on the left. They just want money for desinfection. There is no reason at all to go there. Go directly to the house on the right side behind the gate.

Report Check-In

Same story as others exiting Tajikistan. Guy in shed on the left writes down your details in his big book. Then says you need to pay a fine for not having the form he shows. We politely said “I don’t think so” and that was the end of it.
Then guy in small window at right side of gate checks your vehicle permit. We had not been able to extend the permit so overstayed more than three weeks. He said we had a big problem, that he would not open the gate for us and that we’d have to go back to Murghab. We got angry, told him extending had not been possible, that we knew we were not the first to be told this and that no way were we going back to Murghab. That also was the end of that and the gate was opened.
So be firm and make it clear that they’re not gonna get any money out of you and they give up surprisingly quick.
Only after that first gate you go to the next shed to get your passport stamped and leave through the second gate.

Report Check-In

As already described, 2 guys from 2 "Fake offices" asked us 8$ for desinfection and 2$ for road. After we paid them, the official custom officer fibally showed up... we made a scandale and asked our money back. they did it, so finally we paid only 10$/motorbikes for the official road tax. really not the best way to start your journey in Tadjikistan ! the road in no mans land is pretty bad, we had to cross a river.

Report Check-In

comming from kyrgistan. the road to here was quiet difficult for our campervan without 4x4. very steep.
at the boarder:
first hous on the left. they didnt want to let us in without the road permit ( there is a office in murbag) after a long discussion they let us go without any 'goodies'.
next hous on the left: car taxes 25 dollar. they had an official price list and gave us a reciev. after another office on the left: road permit 80 somoni (10 dollar) he gave us also a reciev. then on the rigth side something about veterinaries... 90 somani (ca 10 dollar) he want to have 40dollar. without reciev. we didnt pay.
boardercobtrol was flirting, steeling cigarets and making bad sexistic jokes during my boyfriend had to be in the office. we will definetly write a mail to the ministery for forigners. be carefull

Report Check-In

Easy border. The officers there all seemed quite drunk and were joking a lot. They even asked us for beer.
Nobody asked us for money and just a very quick glance into our Landcruiser was the “Kontrol”. They did however thoroughly check the vehicle declaration papers. Luckily we had extended the 15 days permit in Murghab, so no problems.

Report Check-In

Took about 20 minutes for customs and 5 minutes for passport control. There was a $10 road tax collected at customs for the motorcycle. Like everyone else, the guy in the white building tried his health insurance scam. I just ignored him and walked away he did not pursue.

Report Check-In

No problems here. Building on the right hand is customs (there is also a sign at the house). Here passport control and car document. More than 15days no problem, no fine. The guy from the building on the left hand will try to stop you from crossing even if the customs says ok. He will try to get money from you for veterinary and desinfection. If you paid for this by entering Tadschikistan give him the receipts and he's ok. If not you don't need to pay. Stay strong!

Report Check-In

Going out of Tajikistan was the easiest of all our border crossings so far. It did not even took us half an hour to leave the country. Don't go to the office on the right side if you come from Tajikistan, they just want you to bribe them. In case you make the mistake you'll see that they'll show you some medical insurance paper and they say you need them. Definitely not true. Don't give them your passport either. Just go directly to the customs which is the office on the right side. We only had our 15 days permit for the car and we overstayed, but they didn't mentioned anything. Road between the two borders is very bad. Crossing into Kyrgyzstan was also easy and fast, had to pay 1000 som.

Report Check-In

Exiting Tajikistan we had no problems. We were 2 days over our 45 days car visa and they did not even bother asking us the 20 som for overstay. Maybe because 2018 is year of tourism they straighten up that border ! note that end of march the 20km to kyrgyz border was very snowy and required 4x4 in some parts

Report Check-In

Confirm the original post, 25 USD road tax, the rest is complete craziness. Ignore the guy who wants to pull you in the backroom office. He tried a couple of times.

Report Check-In

We are a couple on 2 bicycles. Coming from Kyrgyzstan into Tajikistan, we got our passports stamped at the first gate. At the second gate they pulled us into a back room and said we needed to pay $10 for some form that they couldn't explain. After 5 minutes of discussion, a woman in a passing car translated that we have to show proof of medical insurance. It seemed bogus... I explained that we have proof in our email. But since there is no internet here... he basically just walked away and another guy said goodbye. We didn't pay anything.

Report Check-In

We payed 25$ dollars for car import and road taxes. 5$ to health inspektion and 20$ to the ministry of transport. We got a receipt for everything. The veterinar we could skip.
Process went really quick

Report Check-In

If you come across any corruption at this border just send a mail to the Tajik Ministry of Foreign Affairs: [email protected]
We did so because we think the more travelers complain about it the higher the chance that things change...

Report Check-In

We didn't extend our 15 days of road tax in Korogh, so got a fine of 20 TJS per vehicle. Then the man who had to open the gate told us he was transport police and led us to a backroom. He told us we didn't have the necessary vehicle registration forms and that we needed to get them in Murghab. Or pay him a "straf" of 80 USD. We ended up paying him 20 USD for the car and nothing for the motorcycle, but after the gate around the corner is the actual registration. We therefore believe that this first man, who did have visas and forms lying on his desk, was bluffing. (We later met 3 motorcyclists that paid 8 USD for 3 motorcycles.) Apart from these two hiccups no problems in getting out of Tajikistan.

Report Check-In

Getting out of Tajikistan they asked for some kind of permit we were supposed to get in Murgab. Of course we didn't have it, we refused to pay anything, refused to bribe and refused to return to Murgab, shouted at him, collected our document, walked out and continued our border crossing with no problem. Bribing is just making it more difficult for the next travelers to come. Stay strong, don't bribe, fight corruption and don't pay the actual fine neither !

Report Check-In

Don't pay more than 25 dollar for immigration with car.

Hygiene, disinfection and other costs are nonsense. If you don't get the papers for this, don't worry: you don't need it.

Only the 25 dollar for car tax
