Description

The Salmon Glacier is a must see. To access the glacier you have to pass through Stewart, BC, Hyder, Alaska, and then 26km back inside the BC border. Fantastic view to a huge glacier underneath you.

Latest Check-Ins

Road is pretty horrible now as they are preparing to start gold mining operations soon so huge diggers and machinery are using the first half of the road, which means alot of mud in places plus potholes

Second half of road is better

From this carpark there is a return hike of about 1-2 hours to a glaciers passing some telephone poles. I wouldnt do it in rain or fog as the rocks will become super slippery but good for sunny weather. Hike starts just across carpark

Road was fine the whole way. Plenty of mining traffic so maybe they grated the road since the previous posts. Cool place to hang out and eat a meal.

Road isn’t as bad as they said, lots of holes in the road but manageable if you go slow. 2wd chevy managed just fine :)

Absolutely a must see :)

First off; The second you cross the border there will be no service, I was unaware if that (I had full service up until the border). If you know when you'll be returning, make sure you do the ArriveCAN before crossing. The road up is very rutted and washboard. High clearance in important, unless you want to mess up your car. No 4x4 needed today, not sure about other times of the year. I probably have taken 200 photos of this area, it is stunning. One of the coolest places I have ever been to. I am glad the road sucks though, or there would be way too many people up here. I am glad I got to see this glacier before it is gone. The road continues for a while after this and there are some cool tunnels (all say no trespassing) and mining debris scattered around to check out. I went even passed where Google maps says the road ends until there was a no trespassing sign in the road. It's a cool area down there, worth the continued drive, if you want to check it out...I'm glad I did. I actually ended up staying the night by the tunnels. Beautiful and quiet. Added photos from this lookout.

As of today the road is clear of snow to this viewpoint. There are two pit toilets and a few picnic tables/bench. The road beyond this point is still being clearer by the work crew so I did not get further. BE CAREFUL: two dogs where off leash and by themselves at the view point and attacked me and my dog. I am sure they are dogs from someone of the road work crew… but if you come in the next few days, they might still be there… I had to leave and parked a little further down the road to take the scenery in.

Road to the viewpoint is open as of 6/25 despite a sign in the visitor center window that the viewpoint is still closed due to weather. No snow on the roads but definitely lined the roads on both sides.

The road is closed by a lot of snow. Better to get there on late June to be sure of being able to arrive. From Stewart we were able to drive around 15km but missing 12km more. We saw beautiful views and few black bears. Go to the Visitor Center first where they report when the viewpoint is open or closed.

Defenitely worth to drive up there Where on earth can you drive beside a glacier tongue and at the end have this great scenery if you look down on this imense mass of ice.

Beautiful views. We couldn’t make it to the end of the road because of snow. But we stopped pretty much near it and it was stunning. Definitely worth the drive!!!
