Description

warning about the state of the road !
And if you are driving an automatic make sure to set the car to really low gear in order to use the engine break otherwise you might lose breaking power by the middle of this very steep windy and narrow road !!! (in which case just stop and wait 30 minutes for the breaking fluid to cool down).
BUT THE LAKE IS WORTH IT !

BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR BRAKES, STOP AS SOON AS YOU SMELL IT OR FEEL LIKE IT'S NO LONGER BREAKING AS IT SHOULD!

Latest Check-Ins

The road is nicely paved, so that took a bit of the treachery out. Give your breaks a rest before heading down and keep it in low, it is steep! Tight turns may make it tough in a big rig. We drive a 1999 Tacoma and had no issue going down.

Tight turns for our 19 ft van! Give your brakes a nice rest before you do this section. Then be prepared to pay 5 Q (or more?) to enter San Pablo. From San Pablo to San Marcos the road is in horrible condition (usual potholes, dust, and dips). Make sure you have a glass of wine or beer waiting for you for when you finish x

We took this road yesterday with our 25’’ RV, darn it was steep down and we had to let several times the brake to cool down. It’s superb if we had a small car coz the road is in excellent condition. Just the steep road is crazy, well we preferred dirt road than going down.

Go slow and take it easy , it will be ok :-) good luck! Time to control our brakes throughly.

Extremely steep indeed. Coming down in 1st gear, but doesn't help much avoiding breaks smoking. Second break in just 2-3 km...

Road is fully paved, no potholes! Currently it's open only one lane, so you wait at the top in a line of cars for your turn to drive down in a group. It's hard to get around the very tight switchback turns because one lane is closed.

road works still in progress, reopened the road at 3pm to get down to the lake. predominantly dirt from here. recommend a low gear to make the descent. traffic was bumper to bumper all the way down at 3pm so be prepared to ride yo breaks

Road is currently under construction. I was allowed through on a bicycle but I'm pretty sure that vehicles aren't allowed through

Road from panamerican is very good - Just steap with curves and speed bumps in villages. Pot holes starts 8 km before San Marcos but its not worst than other Guatemala mountain roads. Drive slow on low gear, break with engine and you will be ok even with 2wd.

OH MY GOD! we read the coments and were driving from México thinking the road can't be worse, Well yes, and very. Very very big holes, afwull road and no way of regreting and going back. the we knew everybody gets to the place by boat from Panajachel. We fully don't recommend this road. And if you want to go to San Marcos , the nightmare goes on more kms.

yes Is Nice in the Lake, but in our perception, doesn:t worth what it takes. better go to Panajachel and take the boat to visit...

un desastre esta ruta! De verdad. cómo las fotos todo el tramo, ni un respiro de pozos, más bien cráteres en bajada empinada y curva cerrada. aconsejamos visitar el pueblo tomándose el vote

Just drive in the lowest gear you have and brake with moderation. Make sure your brakes do not start smelling/overheating and you will be fine. It is steep, so make sure your vehicle can make it uphill again in case it is old and heavy! Fantastic place down at the lake
