Description

Lovely place to stay. Some chimpanzees around and they are used to humans so you can play with them. Lovely to do, even if it is not their Natural behaviour.
They charge 15000 cfa pp pd plus a big bag of fruits to have a visit here incl. camping
Lots of money but they use it for the monkey research.
You can also go with the chimps into the forest which I highly recommend! It was one of the highlights of our tour up to now to hang around and play with them. They are so cute and funny.

No longer exists. Track to nowhere. We rode onto this location but the unused track lead to a dead end and old decrepit wooden buildings being reclaimed by the jungle. Unless you find contact info on website or something don’t just turn up. It’s gone.

As written before, worth the visit. They changed policy and today you can’t play yourselves with the chimps. Volunteers can stay a few weeks paid at chimps orphanage. When they turn 11 they place them on 2 islands in the river. There are now 3 groups. The small ones in the orphanage and a group of 9 amd 14 on the islands.
Pricing is straight forward. 10k pp, if you join them to the island to feed the chimps you pay the fuel 10k and the food 10k (you can bring yourselves also bananas, ananas, papaya and/or oranges)
We stopped at the village due to to much mud the last km and took the boat from there.

They have a new management now and became a sanctuary- therefor it is NOT allowed and NOT possible to camp there anymore. Just visits during the day. Wildcamping spot just outside next to the road possible... see entry.
Price is still 15.000 CFA pp. We were 3 people and the rest of the prices (basket of fruits for 10.000 CFA and boat tour to island with older and free chimps for 8.000 CFA incl. feeding) we could devide through 3, cause prices are fixed and not per person.
It was a really great and unique experience to play with the young chimps in the forrest - be aware that they really try hard to steal things from your pockets ;)
It's expensive, but totally worth it! One of our highlights

It's a 50 km Dirt Track from Edea. The first 14 km are in not so good condition (still okay) then the Piste gets perfect. The last Kilometer from Marienberg to the Camp is a very narrow and more rough Dirt Track. We drove it in the Rainy Season and it was very muddy, a good 4x4 is a must have.
The Camp hosts 7 young Schimpansees. There are two Islands nearby where there are living 20 more older of them.
We paid 15.000 CFA per Person for the Visit and 10.000 CFA for a big bag of Fruits for the Monkeys (40.000 CFA or 61 Euro in total for 2 Persons). Camping was free. Bring everything (Water, Food, Beer). There is a Pit Toilet and a Place for Showering. You can also bring a big bag of Fruits (Banana, Mango, Ananas) from Douala or Edea and safe the 10.000 CFA. We went to the Forest and played with the Monkeys for one or two Hours. They can get wild and should not be underestimated. We got no Introduction or else, that felt a bit unprofessional. The Monkeys hang around at the Camp and will steal anything from inside or outside your Car that is not properly tied, watch out! :)
You also can visit the older ones on the Island by Boat (you won't leave the Boat). That costs another 16.000 CFA (or bring a 20 l Canister of Super from Edea).
It was awesome to experience the Schimpansees that close, you might never get another Chance. As already said it felt a bit unprofessional and we would have loved to get a better Introduction but it still was an awesome Experience!

It was very nice to get in such a close contact with chimpanzees. We would do it again. But this station is NOT doing research at all! They rescue chimpanzee babys from poarchers and raise them. When they are grown up they bring them to the islands. (You can visit them with the boat). Some of the baby chimps had to stay in a shed, because they are too exhausting when tourists are arround. (The are very active, but the guys there should find a better solution to have visitors and happy chimps!) We asked about the small amount of individuals on the islands and what they do against insemination - they told us it's goods will (nothing a biologist would say!). It's kind a bit unprofessional and drop in the ocean but at least they rescue them and care for.
