Description

Ferry to Quellon, Cisnes, Chacabuco and some islands. See navieraustral.cl/ruta/cordillera. There is only one boat in operation, it's current location can be found on http://navieraustral.nnodes.com/mapa

RMB has a brand new wharf for vehicle loading. May be a bit slippery at low tide, but they can put some wood or sand on the ramp for extra traction.

You can buy tickets at the office, which is located in town and also shown on iOverlander.

You must book in advance and check for any changes at the local office of Navierra Austral. Check regularly at the office for changes in departure time, and be ready at the docks with your vehicle and ticket at least 30 minutes in advance.

NOTE: There is NO ferry to Chaiten anymore.

Ferry to Quellón (with a stop in Malenka), or Chacabuco and Cisnes. With some stops in between.

We saw whales, seals and penguins from the ferry. But other than that, the trip by ferry was not very special. Waves can be a bit rough.

Now in highseason you need to do a reservation for the ferrybypass from Chaitén to Puerto Raúl Marin Balmaceda, because it’s totally sold out for cars. At least three days in advance, better a week before. Otherwise you get stucked in Chaitén for days. It’s not possible to book online, but you can book in every Ferry-Office. The Ferry runs twice a day: 7am and 11pm.

This is also the location from where the bypass ferry to Chaiten leaves. Only other way to reach Chaiten is through Argentina. The road after Villa St. Lucia northbound is closed due to a landslide. The ferry is free and takes about 7h. It runs daily but not on a specific schedule. Apparently you need to make a booking (registration of car plate and amount of people) at the office in town (Puerto Raul Marin), but as there were not too many cars, we were allowed on board without visiting this office. However the ferry had an electric problem and the departure was delayed for hours. Plan accordingly.

Stunning scenery though the fiords. RMB has a brand new wharf for vehicle loading. You can head North to Quellon (Chiloe) or South to Puerto Cisnes or Puerto Chacabuco.
