Free municipal camping, get information in the municipality at the entrance of the town, there is no light or drinking water, a river passes by, near a soccer field, you can enter following the left wall to the bottom or talking to the municipality to open the door. Electricity from solar panel available at some of the fogones (bbq)
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Free camping. Very quiet at night.
Very clean bathrooms with showers.
They’ve got parrillas and a kid’s playground.
TIP: if google maps sends you up the Cerro, there’s a very steep road you’ll have to take on the way down (see photos) but you can get there around the cerro taking Mauricio Rivera street :)
Report Check-Inwe came here on a Tuesday and the gate was open with no one else here. a sign says to check in and out at the tourist center so we went back to do that but it was locked. the rope on the bathroom doors is how you open them, as my wife thought they were locked until I pulled on it. no water spigot around but I was able to spin a shower head off and run the hose out of the window to the van. electrical hookups at sites are turned off but the outlets inside are working. super clean. no size restrictions. there is a kind of skid row of streetdog houses to the west past the fence that had several dogs staying there. they barked at our dogs but kept to themselves and never crossed the fence line. lots of firewood at the pits but much to windy and cold to enjoy using it. truly a great place
Report Check-Inamazing free campsite. Best bathroom ever, clean hot water, toilet paper (!!!).
there are 2 ways to reach and leave one with a very steep hill and the other one just flat and easy that you can take turning left 2 roads before reaching the red church. you ll see some ripio on the left and the sign for the camping, follow for 1.5 km.
the fire pit usually have some wood to burn, good wind protection. amazing spot really.
Great campsite, the camp spots are just perfect; flat, some protection from the wind. Toilet/shower facilities fantastic; brand new, heated, and super clean. Safe, quiet at night, no other vehicles or traffic noise.
Only comment is towards other campers; when we arrived everything was tidy, the same evening the toilet buildings were already a mess with muddy floors and hair everywhere (even though only 2 other cars were there). Be respectful and grateful for such a great maintained place which is FREE of all, and clean after yourselves!
It's a really good campsite. Hot showers, potable water available in the bathroom's taps (a local guy confirmed it is potable) and trash bins are also present. Thanks Cerro Sombrero for this free awesome campsite :))
Report Check-InWe stayed here for one night on the way south on 19 Feb. 2023. Great free camping. Hot water worked and the facilities were clean.
It wasn't windy during the night but if it was, I think the wind shelters will not really help if you have a roof top tent or pop up roof.
We will probably stay here again on the way up north.
Very nice spot next to a small river. There is a lot of shelter from wind, so we had calm night.
Report Check-InUn excelent camping, con buenisima extrutura, ciente com parrillas, baños, ducha caliente y energia.
Además, és gratis!
ótimo lugar para passar a noite, porém os banheiros estavam fechados, com isso não havia água e banheiro.
Report Check-InAgain at this campsite - this time bathroom were opened - brand new, clean and hot shower with good stream! Amazing and still for free.
Report Check-InGood campsite, few lots sheltered from the wind. During our one night stay 4 other campers, bathroom closed as the entrance but you can do it as described - go by the left side. Free.
Report Check-Inamanzing camping for all, cyclist/ motorhome
perfect place and safe. ask before the police open the bath.
free camping
camping fodaaaa! para todos, ciclista e motor home.
precisa antes passar na municipalidade e pedir para abrir os baheiros que sao incriveis!! agua quente e calefaçao. nao paga nada.
Spent one night here, very little wind protection but the place is nice and with no trash. There is a kids playground, too. We came late in the evening and it was locked but entered from the back and left in the early morning.
Report Check-InGates were closed, but as said before it's open at the back (take left to enter).
Nice place, cover a bit from wind.
Entered the camping from the back as we were too late for the tourist information. Met some locals with children at the playground of the campsite. Even if the camping facilities are not open, you can use the facilities at the tourist information when arriving or leaving
Report Check-InThe camping definitely lived up to our expectations after reading the previous comments. We arrived on Sunday so we had to enter through the back (easy). Tourist info only opens during the week in the afternoon (at the time of writing). Once we passed by they opened the facilities for us (sink with drinkable water, electricity, warm showers, toilets, even barbecues!).
Thanks Enrique from the tourist info for the nice explanations and tips on the region.
Extraordinary infrastructure for Chile, even heated bathrooms. Opened for us before New Year's Eve, official opening January. Continues to be free. Have to announce yourself at the Municipality or its Tourist Information at the side, latter very useful also.
Report Check-InThe campsite is closed too. Some work's going on and probably because of covid as it's written at the tourist information center... It was late to find someone to ask, it may be possible to go anyway.
We spend the night close from here, near the Stadio, very peaceful, no one said anything. We saw 3 foxes in the morning!
Arrived here after sunset, so the tourist office was already closed, but the gate was open. Had a quiet night. Watch out for dog poo...
Report Check-In10/10
-for tap water count the third tree left once in
-for hot shower tourist info place
-for tent camping it worked flawlessly, and that is a lot to say on tierra del fuego
- Electricity all good
- Free
Perfect place to spend a quiet night after a hot shower.
There are many spots with wind shelters, bbq firepits and electricity (didnt work for us) - all this for free !
There is also a brand new children playground.
No toilets nor water tap.
Please respect !!
Report Check-InMunicipal Camping in Cerro Sombrero is now open since January 2020. No services but better wind cover than the tourist office. Designated places to make fires and kid’s playground, pet friendly and free. Stop by the tourist office first to let them know you will be staying in the campground.
Report Check-InGreat Place. Main entrance still closed. But we talked to a local passing by and he said that people usually enter through the back of the place (there is no fence or door) and that there shouldn't be a problem doing so. Chemical Toilets only but campsites with fireplaces and wind Protection.
Report Check-InLooks very nice from outside - but it is still closed. We stayed at the tourist information (in the parking area). They have free wifi and a small toilet that is open during the night.
Report Check-InNot open yet even though it looks more or less finished. It has sheltered areas with a fireplace. Every area has a fireplace. There is a playground right next to it.
Report Check-InCamping closed. It's possible to enter by back way but it's forbidden...
Report Check-Inbrand new and finisher but not open yet because municipalidad has no employees working in the weekend
Report Check-InWas closed, but we entered because the gate was open. Later that night we were advised that it was closed but we could stay. Tourist information 700meters away is much better. We noticed that the next day and took a shower over there.
Report Check-InWe checked it out but didn’t stay, it looked like it was still under construction. Will be pretty nice when it’s done.
Report Check-InCampground under construction. Now has seperate camping spaces with picknick tables and bbq areas. Probably building toilet block at the moment. As in Spanish description you can drive around the locked gate on the left side to the back If municipality is closed. Good to Just spend the night. Free
