Take the road to the Magdalena Ridge Observatory, where the asphalt ends turn right on dirt road to campground. Road is steep and partially washed out in places. High clearance recommended.
Quiet spot, we are alone here.

Free BLM campground. We are alone here tonight. Short drive up a rocky gravel road, with quite a few ruts and mild wash outs, but we did it in a fwd Promaster van with AT tires, without any issues. If you want a campfire, bring your own wood. Large fire rings, and solid picnic benches. No water, but there are (bear proof) trash receptacles, and a couple of pit privies. No ATT service. Very quiet.
Report Check-InVery quiet campground. The canyon blocked most of the wind. Despite the name, no potable water. No AT&T service even with a booster.
Report Check-InRoad coming in is mostly paved, but the last bit up into the campground is steep and partly rocky and there are two sharp turns. We made it up in our 26 ft class C and we saw a couple of small trailers but anything bigger I wouldn't recommend. Camping is free right now but we saw a sign that said they are proposing to start charging $10/night in 2022. Trash receptacles and pit toilets. No recycling. Zero att service, a smidge of spotty verizon service that was practically unusable.
Hiking trails around the area, many camp sites observed on trails with some rock fire pits for impromptu camping. We were told this area is popular with hunters but we didn't hear any gun shots. We stayed here 4 nights. Very quiet and peaceful.
