Description

This is one of the most amazing places we have been in Argentina - the ruins of an old hotel and thermal pools, with semi wild horses grazing all around and views up the valley to the Andes. Apparently Peron had this place built and it was where Nazis hid out during WWII. No one knows why it was abandoned. The ruins are now completely run down, no roof or walls, but are amazing to walk around and take photos. There is one large thermal pool and two smaller, more natural ones. The road up here is 60km on ripio, a 2WD will make it if you drive slow (we are 2WD and groups of locals were driving up in sedans with no clearance) but if it rains heavily some of the small river crossings may be tricky. Also, in winter this valley is all snow. You can keep driving past the hotel ruins (apparently 4WD needed) another 16km to the ruins of an old mining town at the end of the road. Or take a tour to the remains of the airplane wreck 'Alive' with a local guy and some horses. You can camp anywhere around here. Lots of firepits, but no facilities. Can get a bit windy. We spent 3 days up here - walking in the valleys, exploring the ruins and soaking. Beautiful valley and definitely worth the detour !!

very beautiful! do not miss! only one passage at the end of 60km of mind numbing ripio is really difficult (you need to cross some Rios) but then again a fiat Punto made it so everybody should be able to make it (still be very careful) it is a beautiful place so please leave it cleaner than you found it!

We slept in front of the abandoned hotel. Quiet night with some wind. The valley is amazing. The road is really bad and it's 60km of "rípio" (+60km for the way back). Keep that in mind. We've been to really bad roads, so when we say bad, we really mean it. Lots of stones and washboards. We took around 3 hours to reach the hotel in our Defender. Any car can do it, but go very easy. We saw a Ford motorhome there and the guy was regretful he took his truck to that road. If you decide to go, there's a relatively easy trekking to the waterfall on the other side of the valley. Find the shallow spots to cross Atuel and El Sosneado rivers. After that, it's a light trekking. Beware the river may rise during the day because of defrost. The thermals were full of people and were barely warm. The smell of sulfur is very intense, to the point of causing a bit of discomfort. :) Following the path after the hotel, there's more abandoned buildings belonging to a deactivated sulfur mine. We didn't do that track, but there are river crossings, so a 4WD is recommended.

We arrived early in the afternoon and there were some people visiting the place, but before the end of the day everyone left, and we stayed lonly for the night.
The larger pool is not that hot, but the other two small ones are warm. Spectacular sky at night.
The way to get here is bad - rural road with many stones. But possible for any high car (we don't need to use the 4x4). We saw besides pickup trucks, a Uno Mille and a VW Kombi making this way.

⚠️Attention: there is a detour on the path - take the right detour, and do not go the left path, because in this stretch there is a steep part with many stones!

long drive but it's worth doing. the pool is luke warm at best but it is a unique place. we had it all to ourselves. plan 2.5 hours min drive from the gas station in Sosneado.

I came here on a Thursday and camped, not one other person here. I enjoyed it, beautiful views, sunset coloured the mountains differently.

Road in is probably 4x4 only at the moment, there's quite a large stream running on the road for a few hundred metres which has washed it out a bit.

With a high clearance 4wd it took us ~2 hrs and 15 mins to get here including pulling a privet out of a ditch. We came here on a friday. It was super crowded with locals all along the way and even in the hotel (people parked cars and bikes INSIDE). From the amount of jeeps, quads and bikes this place is probably a motorsport heaven. And the hotel and its surroundings were full of garbage.. The pools looked nice but too cold to enter. We continued to the next campsite marker were we camped alone. It was quiet and beautiful.

I admit that after 3 months in patagonia, coming from south, we had nicer drives and isolated campings (such as perito moreno NP), but we read so many comments here that we had to check it out.

As for the road- Its a ripio indeed but no so bad. you should be careful when crossing a small, crooked wooden bridge (the only one there is on the way). There are small privates with zero clearance that come here. one made us giggle when it overtook us and left us in dust. just be careful not to slip into a ditch ;)

Overall nice place, but dirty and crowded for us. Perhaps weekdays are better.

This is really worth to go. One of the most beautiful places we have ever been. Wonderfull view to the mountains and up the valley. The pools were worm and have an amazing turquoise colour. Just breathtaking....if you have the oportunity go for it. But bring all your food and water, because its 60 km frim the next small village on a gravel road. we will stay here for christmas. Beautiful energy.

Landscapes are stunning but termal baths aren’t hot, couldn’t get in... the place has its charm, abandoned hotel, sort of spooky but amazing sunset! It was a long drive but very beautiful. It gets very windy, we slept on our rooftent behind the building to get some wind protection.

We don't know where viaje.ch has been but this place is absolutely worth the hype! The 60km drive in is a bit rough but there was no snow on the road and we made it in 1 hour 45 mins in our low clearance 4wd.. do not be put off by the fence at about halfway, it's actually a gate in disguise. There was a section of road about 12km before the pools, that was covered in thick ice, which I probably wouldn't tackle with a 2wd, but I imagine it's only there in the winter months. The hotel ruins are great to explore and the thermals are gorgeous! The pools were not really hot, but still warm enough for a soak - We chose to bathe in the smallest pool as it was the warmest. We also drove further up the valley (there was snow on this section of the road), but there is definitely no way of crossing the river about halfway up where the bridge has been destroyed. We looked for another way up the valley as we really wanted to check out the old mining town, but it looked too marshy to risk it. Even so, the drive was beautiful! We loved it so much up here we stayed another night

PS. BYO firewood 🔥

I don't know where these guys have been, but for me this is really not a place worth visiting... Trash everywhere and the water is not hot anymore... The road is rough, but ok, would not recommend with low clearence. The only thing to see are some nice birds, ok landscape and the abondend hotel. 3h to get there!

very beautiful place - a hotel ruin and a termal bath in the middle of nowhere. amazing landscape. we tried to go to the old mining city but the road ends before because of a destroyed bridge.
