Description

Human shaped sarcophagi sitting high on the cliffs. Very cool! 5sol pp Paid and parked at the main square. Bring binoculars if you have them. 1.5 km walk. 2 - 2.5 hr round trip.

To get to Cruzpata, there are two options (both through Luya): the shortest, most northern route takes you through Luya Viego (which, btw, is visible from the sarcophages) at 6.14100° S, 78.02698° W. This dirt road probably needs 4x4 and steel nerves when wet.

The second route is a bit longer and takes you through Cohechan at 6.18748° S, 78.01934° W, but is suitable for most vehicles: it's mostly gravel. Some washboard.

Beautiful archaeological site, I recommend. The cost is 10 sol for adults and 5 sol for children. To come here the track passing through Luya and Cohechan is in good condition. The people in the village are very welcoming.

We were debating whether to take the detour to come here especially as we didn’t think we were going to get a close up of the Sarcophaguses but it was well worth it. The walk itself was stunning and 25 mins downhill (but of course steep uphill on the way back). You get a good view even with the naked eye and the rocks are beautiful.

Google won’t know the route from Cohechán but we just typed in Cohechan and followed the signposts to Karajia from there. Pretty easy. Lovely chilled community. Peaceful night’s sleep in the main square.

You can stay the night but they close the toilets in the evening. Tranquil place.

Still good, bumpy road even in dry season, possible to camp/tent too on the main place

2022 update: like many places in Chachapoyas, prices have gone up since the last Overlanders. Tickets are now 10 soles, and the kid renting sticks now wants 2 soles! The walk back has about ~220m of elevation gain. We found some of the best chica I've had in Peru from the lady at the first souvenir stall on the walk back.

Nice hike from the town plaza (buy tickets here, you'll see a group of ladies sitting outside the Artesania shop). We parked our van there and it was perfectly fine. DO NOT get here from the north route. Just save yourself the trouble! We ended up getting stuck in the mud, had to walk a while to the nearest town, and after several hours a man agreed to come down in his tractor to help us out. It was so kind of him, saved the day for us! Literally EVERYONE in town was wondering why we took the northern route because it is known to be a pretty terrible dirt road and not many people use it. It was kind of a miracle (and quite stressful) that we got through it in our 2WD. So, do a bit of research before driving here to make sure you pick the southern route. We definitely recommend the visit. It's a steep hike. 5 soles per adult.

Six well preserved sarcophages (and a few more destroyed ones to the right of them) perged high on a ridge can be seen from the trail, which is about 1.5 kilometers from this parking. Entrance is 5 Soles per person, renting a walking stick costs 1 Sole. Take your longest lens. And make sure you have the key for the padlock to the site (which rotates between the visitors).

We did both: southern in, northern out. But it's pretty dry now.

Changing the location of this bc the previous location was a dirty rotten liar. Do not take the route from lamud/luya unless you're looking to do some off roading. I did it with two wheel drive and only made it bc it was dry and God protects fools and the innocent.
Cool place though. A horse is worth the 15 soles. Doggy friendly 😊

There are a couple different roads to get here. The one from Luya/Lamud is pretty challenging. 4x4 required and nerves of steel in a few spots. Take the other route.
Buy tickets across from park (sign says Artesiana) and enjoy the walk. It’s a burner coming back up.
