Latest Check-Ins

The camping is closed, the sendero is most definitely open. Really cool hike. Boots advised for the rocky and muddy parts. Follow the red poles all the way to the glacier, they will take you through some parts of the forest along the way. Tip for the horseflies; hit them with your cap, it will knock them out for a few secs and they'll lose you.
26km from camping Grande. Took us 7 hours.

You have to register at the office before going into the Park. We arrived at 9:30 and it was open.
We did the hike to the Glacier. It was really nice but long.
You have to park at the Campground Grande and start the hike here (the road is doable for every kind of vehicle). First 2km very steep then flat. In total 26km 6:30-7h.
Mi octobre, the campground are still close. But toilet and cold shower are still open.

Absolutely stunning camp and nice hike.
The road to ventisquero camp is open, but only for 4x4 (i think it was always 4x4 only).

The hike is 22,5 km return, took us 7 hours. Easy snd flat only a little up at the end (not steep).

Hike is well marked and follows beautiful river and native forrest on the right.

The camp site in itself is so beautiful that it is worth it in itself. And free!
Little enclosed parkingd with direct wiev of glacier. Has palapas and grass areas in front!

Totally recommend going here!

Report Check-In

The trail itself is open and is generally in pretty good shape- cleared and well marked, with one required river crossing (3 on route, but can avoid the first 2 by staying right of the river). However, as of Dec 2021, the road to the trailhead at Camping Ventisquero is closed. You must park at Camping Grande, which adds 3 very steep km each direction.

Report Check-In

Be prepared for 30 km of hiking. In pandemic dec 2020, both roads leading in are chained and padlocked. So we had to park before camping grande even, basically the small carpark after darwin trail, where there is a signboard that says 4x4 only. That added 10km to the hike as we did the longer and less steep route (also more scenic) back.

If you ask any ranger they will tell u it is closed, and it has been for years it seems. there are 5 major fallen logs, 2 sections where the raging river ate up the trail and 1-2 km of pure bog where the boardwalk is missing.

That being said, it’s still pretty ok to do if you have a full day. We did it in 11 hours return, with breaks and are not fast hikers. We saw a crazy enthusiastic cyclist who left his bike in the forest and camped at the base of the glacier.

At the 4.2 km mark from camp ventisquero, you will enter a forest (dont follow the first wooden pole into the forest, stay left and then enter the forest after if not you just went up and down for nothing). There’s 4 fallen logs to scramble past, and can be a little tricky as the logs are huge and failure could mean falling into a deep river. It’s not that hard but good shoes are necessary.

The bog area about half an hour into the trail from camping ventisquero is impossible to avoid so get ready to have wet feet. Ankle deep in places.

You have to ford a 6-8 m river (ankle deep dec 2020) near the end.

Besides the 1-2 km of bog and 1-2 km crazy first forest section (hugely overgrown, we crouched the whole way), trail is relatively flat and easy

On top of this 30 km return hike, you can add another 3-4 km return if you want to touch the glacier...we didnt.

Now if you just want an easy access hike the el mirador one has a good view of the glacier

Have fun guys if you do it. And there are 5 logs to scramble past (1 after the bog section, 4 in the overgrown forest). Careful with the fallen away paths (2 small sections, 1 in forest, 1 near the burnt forest at the end)

This is indeed an easy hike, but only if you follow the markers (wooden poles with red paint), you should only need to cross one shallow river. If you lose track of the markers, follow the tree line to your right. The trail does get a bit hectic when you must enter the trees to continue the trail, as you will go up and down quite a bit and must climb over a few fallen trees (for about 20 mins - don’t give up, it’s worth it). Also, when exit the tree trail, you will cross the river, you will lose the marker, so when you cross, don’t go up, follow along the water until you see an opening with stacked rocks, exit here and the markers will continue. It’s a lovely hike and worth the time, even in the rain. Enjoy!

Very beautiful hike and very nature path! It took us 5 hours but we runned a bit on our way back. You need to cross the river 5 or 6 times but the water level was under our knees. We were alone to go to the mirador that day.

Report Check-In

took us almost 9 hours. we did go the extra bit to the actual glacier past the end of the trail, but that only added maybe an extra 40 minutes round trip. my phone marked 16mi, not the 20k (12.4mi) it says it is. not a good road for motorcycles fyi! steep with some loose earth.

Report Check-In

stopped at the middle of the way somewhere in the forest, many fallen trees and landslide we didn't cross the main river...but beautifull hike and Valley, many birds and beautifull vegetation.

not an easy walk.

we start before the main campground because the two road were chained/closed. 4km short and very steep hike to go to the Ventisquero campsite and 10km more to reach the glacier.

at this time of the year, all campground are closed. we sleep on the parking lot before the closed campground.

Report Check-In

Hiked as close to the glacier as we could. There was considerable flooding due to snowmelt. Made it from the parking lot by the road to the campground and back in just over 3 hours. The walk to the campground was quite steep.

Report Check-In

Started the hike from Camping Grande as we only have a 2WD. Ranger asked us not to try the 4x4 road so as not to impact the road condition. Starting at Camping Grande adds 2km each way, but also 400m of climb.

Glacier hike is beautiful, except there is a muddy rainforest bit with some fallen trees that was a bit of a scramble and not much fun.

6hr return is about right.

Report Check-In

Nice walk and easy until you‘ll get into the forest - there were some fallen trees to climb over and the trail isn‘t marked well at this part. As soon as the river is crossed, it’s easy again.

very nice walk. a bit of a scramble when going into the woods at one point but overall pretty easy to do.
had lunch at the glacier but the flies were bothering us there

apparently it's not free but nobody to collect anything

very beautiful!!! the free campsite is also very nice

Report Check-In

Great hike up a broad flat river valley.

Seems like they have changed the roads a round a little, to make it a one way loop in the clockwise direction. There is a sign warning that it is for 4x4 vehicles only, which we ignored. It is warranted for the second part of the loop (the return). On the return there is a very steep grade. The first 2 sections had paved concrete tracks that work great, but the third was vey steep and loose gravel. No traction. We attempted it in our 2wd sprinter, but had to back up and do a very sketchy turn around into a soft shoulder. We are pleased that we got out without damage or getting stuck. Ended up going back on the other road we came in on and the going the wrong way.

Report Check-In

Hike to the glacier (yes you can actually touch it!! - at own risk) is 13k. We did this on a rainy day and it was still possible to cross the river, just look carefully for the right spot! Track gets very wet on a rainy day but is not muddy.

Report Check-In

It's a beautiful hike 10 kms one way to the Ventisquero (about 3 hours), pretty flat but with a lot of rocks and one river crossing, so highly recommended to wear hiking boots. It could get windy at the ventisquero so bring some warm clothes.
We are slow hikers, it took us 6,5 hours to get there, have lunch, rest and come back.
