Description

BLM dispersed parking / camping on road to wilderness area. A few miles off I-10. Good road - the last couple, dirt ok for 2nd. Beautiful spot, quiet except the Border Patrol helicopters. Saw nobody. Good place to get off highway and spend the night or go a little further in (4wd required) and hike in the Wilderness area. No services. Pick up your trash and bury your poop

The Muggins Mountains Wilderness area is located approximately 25 miles east of Yuma, Arizona.

Access by high-clearance and/or four-wheel drive vehicles is recommended.

To access Muggins Wash, take exit 21 (Dome Valley) from I-8. Pass through Ligurta on Old Highway 80 and turn north onto County Ave. 20E. Turn east onto County 7th Street and Drive Beyond the Dome Valley Transfer Station to the Muggins Wash nonwilderness corridor. The corridor extends into the center of the Wilderness near the southern base of Muggins Peak but becomes rough, four-wheel-drive-only for the last mile or so. It is recommended that you leave your vehicle near the information kiosk or before descending into the wash.

The gps coordinates via google will lead you to the wrong spot. The review that says to drive around a fence past a gravel pit will also lead you to a road with a very angry person.

Report Check-In

Arrived at dusk and camped out — Busy place during the daytime. Two trucks showed up In the morning with hikers. Half dozen other hikers walked up from the entrance sign. Lots of areas fenced off to be reclaimed as “wilderness area”.

Beautiful views, the sunset was amazing - but I’ll probably move on from here to find a bit more solitude.

Great spot with nice hiking trail in the mountains. Very clean area at the trail head to camp. We originally thought google maps was wrong when we arrived at the end of the pavement but you have to drive around the fenced off area and drive on what looks like a gravel pit. But keep going and you will end up at the trailhead. Please leave it cleaner than you found it so we can all enjoy places like this.
