Description

Before or in the parking at the entrance to the Volcano, the guy at the entrance asked 10$ for 2 person and our van, we could use showers and toilets.

On top of the $5pp fee for camping, there is a $5pp for entry to the volcano.

Directions: Please take the route from Leon. From Malpasillo, it is very dificult to get through with larger cars. Road conditions on this site are very bad!

Stayed for one night. paid 5€ per person and 10€ for a guide. Toilet and Shower.
You can also rent your equipment there.

Report Check-In

We park free of charge next to the Visitor Center, before the entrance, as the nice lady at the checkout has recommended us because we have traveled late. Directions: Please do the fall if you come from the north, take the detour via Leon!!! Directions from Malpasillo is possible but the road is very bad and hardly possible with large cars. Deep hanging branches everywhere and the streets far too narrow.

Report Check-In

we had a great time camping and volcano boarding here. The toilets are ok although had a few toads jumping around at night. There is a big covered area if you want to sit and cook. Camping next to the volcano can get super windy so we opted to camp by the visitor centre.

Report Check-In

Camped here behing the visitor center for 1 night. Paid 5$ pp to camp, 5$pp to enter the park and 10$pp to rent equipment for surboarding. Very quiet place and the staff if very nice.
They have restrooms and cold showers. We went to the volcano with the van only to take pictures otherwise the walk to its base is around 15min. Sleeping there is possible but there is no amenities
Sunset from the top is beautiful.
The road to the visitor center is doable without a 4x4 but it is sandy

Report Check-In

followed Google maps indication to this point, the road is very doable without 4wd, we did it with a Rear WD Chevy van, some spots are sandy, just accelerate. Is a 1laneish road so be careful on curves car comes full speed other way round and can be dangerous, also many horse/cows on the street.
5 us entrance ,10 rental gear and another five to camp there, decent shower and toilette, very basic. very friendly people working there, you can rent board in the afternoon, do the sunrise and then do boarding again the day after!

Report Check-In

Nice spot to stay with showers and toilets. no Wifi and bad connection with Claro. Welcoming team from the Cerro Negro. No mosquitos and fresh air in the night really appreciated!

Report Check-In

Camp spot is actually pretty neat, better than we expected from reading the reviews here.

Night was quiet and cool. Shaded spot available on the left side next to the light green building. Toilets mostly clean, tp and with proper flush. Showers cold but good water pressure to wash off the black sand after boarding.

Big space to cook. Filled up our shower tank with a hose attached to the outdoor sink.

The doggo on site is super sweet and keeps away the coyotes :)

Report Check-In

still $5 entry, $5 to camp. The caretaker advised me to pitch my tent in the lot of the visitor centre near the showers and toilets. On the upside the caretaker stays all night so it feels very safe, on the downside he listens to TV very loud until late! Probably worth pitching on the volcano field instead as long as you're OK walking to the loos.

For motorbikes, the sand road in as mentioned before does take sand riding skills - the sand is deep and rutted for much of the 14 km. Not for overloaded bikes unless you know what you're doing.

I reviewed in the pin at the other parking lot, but want to post here also to make it clear. I made it up here in a 24ft sprinter van with 2wd dual rear wheels. That being said, the road in is sandy and some parts made me nervous. I did not want to have to slow down or else I would have most likely gotten stuck. I would not attempt this road in a heavy 2wd without the back up of traction pads. Obviously it can be done though. Other than that great camping spot to hike Cerro Negro early.

Agree with comment from „bumpyroad“, we had no problem to get to the volcano with our truck camper (6m long, 2.1m wide and 3.1m high)! Just make sure you take the „main track“ coming from Leon where the big truck from the tour operators (bigfoot) goes as well! We‘ve been told that there are in total 5 ways to get there but only two are really good.... Once you leave the paved NIC12 all the locals you ask on the street point you in the correct direction in case you’re unsure about the road.
Maps.me doesn’t do the work, that’s why I put a pin in iOverlander for the turn off from the NIC12 on the dirt road because the big sign for the volcano is easy to be missed
I wouldn’t drive the ~22km in a normal street car because of some sandy patches and the last bit is rocky but any SUV can do it and no 4x4 required. Took us roughly an hour to get there, left Leon at 2pm and it was the perfect time to climb the volcano in the lesser hot hours, see the sunset and do the sandboarding.
We stayed at the entrance because they have good showers to get rid of the sand (believe me you need that....!!).
The local guys managing the entrance and renting the equipment are super friendly and helpful and are happy to accommodate overlanders.
$5 entrance fee pp
$10 equipment rental for sandboarding pp
$5 camping pp
prices are basically not negotiable but maybe you’re able to make a package and get it slightly cheaper... ;-)

If coming here by motorcycle, make sure you have good experience driving in sand. After a few kilometres of the bikes dancing around and one of them being dropped, we decided to turn back.

Report Check-In

Got up here with no problem (4x4 camper with 3.1m height) - when we were up we met a nice French family who came here with a 24foot long 2wd standard RV - so at least at the moment you don't need to worry about the height and it's possible with 2wd despite the road being a little sandy. We came from Leon and followed the road that has signs and yellow arrows indicating the path to Cerro Negro - this path differed in parts from the path you see on OSM/maps.me

Report Check-In

Do not drive here without 4x4, nor low clearance or higher than 3meters. All sandy roads lead here.
it was an Odysee come here with our truck Camper and we damaged our roof (i think we only have 2,8m where that happend)
we got a local to Show us the widest roads as maps.me was no help (backing out a 3m wide dirt road around turns After fallen trees were in the way)
from estelli as well as headed to leon (the damage happened on the way to leon the "Main road" for the Tour trucks, without local guidance)
The campground is just awesome.
we did Not pay the night as we said we would rent equipment the next day

Report Check-In

The guy at the entrance asked for 15$ then 10$ for our van and 2peoples. Including showers and wc.
We choosed to move 100m down and we stayed overnight for free.
Check the other wild spot.

Report Check-In

There was a 45 min dirt/gravel/sand road to get here. Something punctured our tire on the way in. The lot was outside of the gates with no real security so just keep that in mind. It did have a small amount of shade to park under if you're not too tall. It was very hot during the day but cooled down to a nice temp at night. Didn't even need to use our fan. It was a peaceful, quiet place, minus the coyotes and roosters. The coyotes walked all around our campsite in the middle of the night. Also there are a LOT of medium sized spiders at night but they are only in the brush areas where the leaves have collected...wear a headlamp and you can the their eyes shining everywhere. Bathrooms were OK...not much light in there. You can pay the entrance fee and rent your own volcano boarding equipment here, but we strongly suggest just paying the extra $10 to go with a group. We used the "Volcano Day" company and it came with a tank top and a free banana and beer afterwards.

Great place to camp overnight. Toilets, showers and a little bit of shade. Volcano boarding is a blast. You can rent board, suit, goggles and gloves for $10pp at the entrance.
