Coming from the Campo de Piedra Pomez, we thought it was a good idea to take the Ruta 43 and 17 in a North direction. Expecting a paved or good road on the 51, we were totally surprised that this road is in a shockingly bad condition, compared to the other 2 roads. Extreme ripio and a hardened surface, plus a mountain pass that is not that special or pretty.

The road conditions depends if the machine which cleans the road had passed or not. We went to tolar grande with our 2WD van. It took us 6 hours to go with a bad road, and 4 hours to come back with a road cleaned by the machines. So it's doable for any vehicle, just take your time.
Report Check-InCorrugated road but it's doable but any decent car and most motorbikes, it's used a lot by locals and lorries. I've seen worse roads around San Antonio.
Be careful there's some sand patches on the way
Yes it's a pure washboard dirtroad but doable for any car (even if you feel bad for your van)
