Description

Nemba One Stop Border Post:We departed Burundi to enter Rwanda.

1. At Burundi side entry gate we showed exit permission letter obtained in Bujumbura at Minister L’interieure (see location on iOverland).
2.Immigration for passport stamp out of Burundi.
3. Burundi Police wanted to see vehicle registration and passport of driver.
4.Customs took TIP and printed an Exit Permit.

Rwandan Side
5. Went to the Health Centre to show our COVID vaccine cards. If no card then need to do a test.
6.Went to Immigration. US passport $50 for visa. SA passport NO cost for visa. Needed details of where we would be staying and contact details.
6. Went to customs to get Rwandan TIP- cost RFr 15000. We had to exchange money at the Forex on site.

7. Car and camper were both thoroughly searched by police (not sure if these were Burundian or Rwandan police).
8.As we went to exit gate the Rwandan police requested to search our bags- told them we had none because all our clothes are in our camper. They had a quick look. Took the Rwandan TIP and driver passport- wrote details in some book and we were allowed to enter Rwanda

At the moment this border is closed. Burundi closed its Borders to Rwanda. Check media reports if it is open before you go here. At the moment you have to detour via Tanzania.

RWANDA -> BURUNDI

Everyone was helpful in telling us which window to go to next. No fixers. French spoken widely, basic English too.

You will visit 3 windows. One to stamp out of Rwanda. Another to pay for your visa on arrival for Burundi (40USD cash only, 3 days only but can be extended I’ve heard!) and have the car papers checked. And the third to get your entry stamp for Burundi. After that, we drove through two more checks of car papers, passport and car.

Note that the East Africa visa expires immediately when you leave the region - cannot re enter Rwanda on the same visa, need to pay again, on arrival, 50 USD - cash only.

All in all took about 90min but will vary depending on how many people are queueing. The quietest border crossing we’ve had in the region.

Fast and straightforward process here, but...
You must have COMESA insurance. It seems not to be possible to buy a local insurance with foreign plate.
The officer here helped us to contact an insurance in Kigali and buy it remotely, but not recommended 😅
