Description

This is the beginning of the trek known as Codo de Los Andes, or sometimes referred to as Che Guevara route. we did a tour from samaipata and walked from here to Cuevas, about 11km. it's a one way trip that was pretty interesting, but from here to the top is about 1km of very steep hill and the view is incredible. kind of like the area around Machu Picchu. we didn't pay much money for the tour, but you can do this awesome bit for free without having to negotiate a taxi back to the mountain to get your car.

Latest Check-Ins

This is the start of Codo de los Andes trek. We also stayed at la bolivianita and the owner Jose Luis drove us up and down here for 100 bolivianos (he said when is more than 2 people he charges 150bolivianos).
If you have a 4x4 you can also drive up here on your own.
The trekking costs 15bolivianos per person, we went for sunrise and it was that early when we finished that there was nobldy charging money yet.
I believe there are several tours that take you here but you can easily do it by yourself. The trekking starts going up to the left in the signal that sais “Refugio Codo de los Andes” (see attached pictures) following the muddy path. Then you just have to continue some minutes with easy ups and downs until you arrive to a flat area were you turn left and see another signal that sais “Comunidad Palermo, Area comunal….” (see attached pictures). Once there the steep part begins, and you will have to go all up for 40 minutes approximatly until you arrive to the top where the views are stunning.
From there you can whether go back to the start or follow the path all down and finish the trek in Cuevas (we wanted to do this but our taxi driver told us you can’t do it right now because waterfalls are closed, we didn’t insist).
Totally recommended trekking and we think this is the cheapest way to do it.

Forgot to mention - wear trousers and check yourself after hiking. LOTS of ticks of tiny ticks on us afterwards even with them on.

We stayed at La Bolivianita campground and got Jose to drive us up to the start point, while leaving our van in the campsite. He can take up to 6 people and charges 150bs total for the car. He offered us sunset (4am start) or sunrise (4pm start). We went for sunrise so that we had time to hike back, view is incredible and we had the whole thing for just 4 people as we were ahead of other tours. It was about 14km total to hike from this point back to the camper. Cheapest and possibly nicest way to do it! We also needed to pay 20bspp at Cuervas to exit.
