Description
Here is the first checkpoint to allowed you (or not) to take the road. We waited for 1 hour and finally they gave us an escort.
We are a French couple traveling with a van.
We were escorted by 15 different vehicles during 370km from 10am to 5pm. They switched every 20km...
At the end, we had to wait during 2 hours at the last check point. Finally, at 7pm, they told us we can continue alone. It was dark so we slept at the checkpoint and continued the next morning.

We drove alone the firts 250 km, then they escorted until a bit earlier than Samarra. We told them if they could drive 90km/h and they were going at a good speed. Nice people, just be pacient for the passport checking and changes of escorts.

They are all verry,verry friendly. They take your passport but take a lot of care for it and show you allways who has the passport.
Plan your escort, because ther is no stop and no rest, better to do the dogane one day, sleep at the boarder area bevore leaving the exit gate and go early to the escort in the morning. It takes about 12-13 hours until the first opportunity to sleep at a checkpoint.
8am : I left the border
00h30 : arrival in Baghdad
The escort left on my own close to Abu Ghraib.
Long day to be expected... Bring cash because there is no ATM on the way (1st ATM in Baghdad). Bring also food because all stops are made in the middle of the desert. Make sure to have enough gas: there is a gas station right after the border but only a couple on the way. I advise to put enough gas for the journey at the border if you have a tank big enough. The military is very friendly and will give you water along the way.

We were traveling with 2 4wd camping cars (italian & swiss).
Everybody was friendly and we took a lot of pictures with the hummers and soldiers. But it was exhausting.
We waited for 20 minutes at about 4 pm after crossing the border and than we couldt go alone.
