Description

This is the base for trips to visit the 'serpientes colgante de Kantemó', a tour to a cave in which snakes live in the cave walls and hang down to snatch bats out of the air when they leave in the evening. It consists of about a km hike or cycle through the forest to the cave mouth, then 90-odd minutes checking out the snakes and the bats, the aquatic life inside a small cenote within the cave, and some marine fossils which apparently date back to the Jurassic era.

Necessarily an evening tour, $630pp. Kids are welcome from aged 10 and up, same price. It's pretty physical (and not for the claustrophobic, or bat or snakephobic!), take closed shoes and comfy clothes, and water. You'll get hot and sweaty, and probably a bit dirty. Hard hats, gloves, headtorch and facemasks provided.

Apparently best end August till May (we were there in July and just saw a couple of - disappointingly inactive, though I'm sure not from the bats' perspective! - snakes; it's mating season and they're mostly hiding out deep in the cave where humans can't access them!).

There are also comfortable cabañas available nearby for $700 (mosquito nets, hot and cold running water etc) - I'm sure they'd have no problem with people parking up for the night in the village, or in the lovely quiet cabañas parking area. Small village so come prepared in terms of food and water etc.

Contact Baltazar on 997 977 4920 to arrange.

This place is awesome! Best experience we’ve had in Mexico. Well worth the $630 pesos.

Adrian and Baltizar were awesome. Despite them speaking little English, and us speaking even less Spanish, we communicated enough get points across and have an absolute BLAST!

They let us use the showers when we got back, (which was needed from crawling through bat poop) they also let us park in front of the office to sleep at night and left the bathrooms open for us :)
Don’t miss this, it’s the best stop we’ve had in MX!

What an amazing experience. $630MX per person to take a scenic bike ride, explore a very big cave, see a LOT of bats, watch a snake close up eating a bat, see a wild cenote at the bottom of the cave with several species living it in it and all of this with 2 great guides. Wow! They even let us take our nice camera to capture it all on the Meandering Maynard’s YT. Pictures don’t do this place justice. It’s beautiful and filled with bats!
I wasn’t super convinced when my partner described it to me but I’m so glad we came by here.
Baltazar and Adrian were awesome. They taught us many words In Spanish and Mayan and made the trip very enjoyable.

10 out of 10!

We loved it, it was an intense experienced. It's something you wont find anywhere else. Seeing the cave with bats, the underwater animals and the marine fossiles was already nice, but seeing the hanging serpents is really impressive and fascinating. Our guides were really friendly, careful and interesting, with lots of explanations. It's maybe not for everyone as it is a little adventurous (you need not to be afraid to be in a cave at night with animals), but if you love nature, you will love this experience. All the more, its satisfying that your money as tourists go to a mayan community and a preservation goal of the biodiversity of this cave. The tour is only possible on the evening. We wrote to Baltazar a day before to arrange.
You can also rent a cabaña : they are nice and confortable. Others activities are possible (kayak on a laguna, hike..)
We paid 630 pp for the tour and 700 for the cabaña.

we visit this cave tonight. it is a lot of money but it was really worth it because it is an unique experience.
we called Baltazar around 15.00 and made an appointment at 17.30 to bike to the cave.
where we got gloves a mask and a helmet with a light.
we where happy with all of those things because the bats fly in to you probably more than ones.
where good shoes and clothes that can get dirty. and have some clean ones ready when you get back.
we found it really worth it and afterwards we slept in front of the office.
