Description

UPDATED PRICES 2023: $300 PER SITE (IF YOU BOOK BEFOREHAND!). If you’re lucky and can book this as a walk-in from main camp (Nyamepi)!

Chitake Campsite 1 is a lovely sandy spot next to a riverbed of which the source is apparently a spring (but in June it looks more like a mostly dry riverbed with a slight trickle). It's a beautiful spot, on a flat patch of sand. It's an elephant highway, the riverbed, calm elephants going up and down. Also many relaxed baboons (wild, they leave you alone) and saw Black-backed jackal and Spotted hyena drinking at night. We heard lions further south but didn't see them.

We actually booked Chitake 2 but that's a farce of a campsite, in the middle of shrub, overgrown, no view anywhere around, and we were hoping to see the lions at that spot as everyone keeps saying it is dangerous lion territory up there, but did not even see tracks, so we went for the much more beautiful Chitake 1 instead. Amazingly quiet at night except for nature sounds.

Bring everything yourself as if wild camping. There is only a pit toilet.

Latest Check-Ins

Nice campsite with a straight view to the river. Pit toilet and that’s all. Quite a big clearing, so can fit at least two cars.
Only downside is that the campsite 3 is next doors and is also used by i.e. mobile safari companies. Campsite 2 is on the other side of the river, but no views, just a bush site.
Price for these as a walk-in (which we paid) is $70/pppn + park fees, so it’s pricey but this place (Chitake Springs) is amazingly beautiful. Heard lions very near camp during the night, and elephants, too.

Prices have increased insanely. Site is now 300$ per night per site (max. 6 people). No reduced price possible at gate on the day itself.

Chitake campsite 1 is so far the best site for engagement with lions, elephants, kudu, warthogs and many more. This campsite is not big rig friendly. Only a pit toilet no showers.
This site is the best of three sites and right on the river edge not far from the spring. We heard the lions roar the whole night and saw 7 adult lions and 4 cub’s not far from the campsite. Also notable is about 4 km from the campsite on a hill are many ancient baobab trees on a hill. It is a site to behold. We recommended this place and give it a 5 star for being close to the wildlife!
