Description

To get here requires some effort, but it's totally worth it and here's why. This nature campsite is a protected area for wild axolotls! There are a few trails on the camp ground that lead towards pools where this critically endangered species live.

So that's why you want to go here, now how to get here. You need to make a reservation or call/whatsapp/facebook chat ahead. The phone number is +52 4412768838. The name of the place is Campamento El Cedral.

To get there I only recommend small vans or 4*4s with a rooftop tent. We have a 3m high, 6m long van and could not make it there (too many low hanging branches). So, instead we hiked about 2km downhill with our tent. Don't ask Google Maps to bring you here because it fails miserably. Find the bus stop in Pinal where Calle Federal 120, meets Calle La Escondida. Follow Calle La Escondida downhill to where the pavement ends. Take the left dirt road, it does show on MapsMe not on Google Maps. Follow this road all the way down, you'll see an axolotl painted on a wall to mark the entrance.

Costs are pretty steep but worth it to protect this area. We payed $200p per person per night and there are zero amenities here, not even water. The only water source is where the axolotls live and you can't touch it (rightly so!). There are sites with fire pits. Dogs are welcome for another $100 and need to be kept on leash near the pools. There is Telcel signal ranging from H+ to 4G.

If you want to get more info you can also visit the highly recommend Pinal Adventures outdoors sports company in town.

Latest Check-Ins

We did not camp here, but it looks like a beautiful spot! There are still some low hanging branches so your van can be too high.

We did the walk to see axelotls, which was really cool. The walk is about 2,5 km and goes steeply down and more gradually up, so it's doable within an hour and a half (axelotl watching time not included). We saw a lot of axelotls in the little pond as well as in the river.

The walk costs 100p per person, which they use to conserve this area and the highly endangered axelotls.
