South Africa
10 road blocks with gangs demanding money. They burned tires, shattered glass, ripped parts of the highway out to use as road blocks. We ran out of money after the 5th 6th road block and gave them Biltong. Then on the 7th or 8th roadblock we offered the remaining sweets to the guy but he held up a brick and asked us to pay or else he will smash our cruiser. In that 2 minutes, a mob had gathered and climbed onto our cruiser. I found a old lesotho note in the glove box and he let us pass.
The reason they gave for smashing glass and blocking the main highway in and out of tugela falls was that they had no electricity. Please find out road situation before driving to the falls. We are super shaken after having rocks hurled at our cruiser and multiple people jumping onto our car.

Surely not the most friendly town in South Africa, but we had no issues. Would say, it's safe.
Report Check-InIndeed lots happend in this city if you read the news. But we had no problems. This is the road to sentinel hike so 100 tourists drive this road every day. I guess and hope what happend was a one time event. I would mark this spot as save to pass.
Report Check-InI had no trouble going in and out. However, I did see some funny dudes with (baseball) sticks hanging around at the northern entrance of town. A quick check of news ("KwaKwa") is probably a good idea before going.
